Hoosiers Shut Out Cal, 3-0 (08-29-03)

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 7 Indiana men's soccer team captured a 3-0 victory over No. 17 California to open the 2003 season in the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic, 3-0. The Hoosiers scored all three of their goals in the first half and rode junior Jay Nolly;s effort in goal to shut out the Golden Bears. The victory gave IU a 1-0 record while Cal dropped to, 0-1.
"I didn't think a young team like ours would jump up on a veteran, ranked team like we did," head coach Jerry Yeagley said. "I wasn't expecting that at all. Our midfield was the difference in the first half. We had some excellent combination play and I thought we moved well off the ball. We picked up a great win."
The Hoosiers jetted to any early lead as they scored the first and deciding goal in the second minute of play. Senior midfielder Vijay Dias set the tone as junior Ned Grabavoy provided the assist. After receiving a pass from redshirt freshman John Michael Hayden, Grabavoy dribbled to the left side of the box before he was met by a California defender. The New Lenox, Ill., native flicked the ball behind to Dias, who one-timed the ball into the right side of the goal.
California would respond quickly, placing two shots on goal in the first five minutes. Nolly was up to the task as he made saves on both plays.
In the 31st minute, Grabavoy struck again, this time with a goal of his own. He dribbled past one defender and buried a shot into the corner of the net from 10-yards out.
Indiana's third and final goal came a little over five minutes later. Sophomore Brian Plotkin rifled a shot from the top of the box and into the lower left corner of the goal.
The Nolly-led defense would make the lead stand. Nolly finished the game with a career-high nine saves in recording the ninth shutout of his career.
"I thought Jay Nolly has superb game," Yeagley said of his goalkeeper. "I don't like to say that about a goalie because that means he was under some pressure and that we had some breakdowns."
The first game of the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic was delayed over an hour by lightning and storms in the Bloomington area. Once the storms passed, Notre Dame and UAB played to a 0-0, double-overtime tie.
The Hoosiers will return to action Saturday for day two of the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic. Indiana will battle No. 20 UAB at 7:30 p.m. The IU-UAB match will be broadcast on the radio by Bloomington's WCGL 1370 AM. Chris Doran will call the action and Sean Phillips will provide color commentary. In the first game on Saturday, California will take on No. 12 Notre Dame at 5 p.m.
