Indiana Sets Record with Seven Goals

Bloomington, Ind. - Indiana won its second straight field hockey match with a 7-0 shutout of Miami (Ohio) on Sunday, Aug. 31 at Mellencamp Pavilion. The seven goals are an Indiana single game record, as junior Kayla Bashore, senior Jamie O'Pray and sophomore Nikki Orciuch also etched their names into the individual record book.Bashore finished the game with two goals to give her three on the season, tying her total goals scored from last year. Those two goals also tied an Indiana record of most individual goals scored in a game.
O'Pray and Orciuch also tied the Indiana record for most assists in a game with two.
Indiana's head coach Amy Robertson could not be more pleased with her team's start.
"This game shows the progress we have made over a year," Robertson said. "Scoring seven goals shows how far our team has come just from last year. We stepped up today and played as a team."
Sophomore Lesley Wiler, O'Pray, Bashore, junior Lindsey Nealis all scored goals in the first half with two assists to Orciuch and one to O'Pray.
Indiana continued its offensive onslaught into the second half. Senior Erica Nilsson scored a goal with an assist to O'Pray and unassisted goals by freshman Jodi Murphy and Bashore.
Indiana was also able to give its bench some experience as every player saw action.
"The situation presented itself to where everyone was able to come in and get some game experience. I am very proud of all the girls and ready for next week," Robertson said.
Indiana finished the game with 28 shots to Miami's four.
The Hoosiers return to action on the road in Muncie, Ind. to face 2-0 Ball State Friday, September 5, at 3:00 p.m. and Southwest Missouri State Saturday, September 6, at 1:00 p.m.
