Hoosiers Prepare for Kentucky

SERIES HISTORY
Indiana owns a slight 17-15-1 edge in the all-time series between these two teams. The Wildcats have won seven of the last eight meetings. Indiana last won in 2001 with a 26-15 win at Memorial Stadium on December 1.
Indiana is 9-4-1 against Kentucky at home with an 8-4 mark at Memorial Stadium.
LAST MEETING
Last season saw these two teams battle during a rain storm in Lexington and the Wildcats scored 13 points in the fourth quarter en route to a 27-17 victory.
Kentucky jumped out to a 14-0 lead on touchdowns from Aaron Boone and Artose Pinner. But IU answered with 17 unanswered points on touchdowns by Glenn Johnson and Joe Gonzalez and a Bryan Robertson field goal.
Charles Harp gave Kentucky a 21-17 lead with a six yard touchdown reception and Quentus Cumby capped it off with an 82-yard interception return with 2:46 left in the contest.
Yamar Washington posted 163 yards rushing while Courtney Roby hauled in 101 receiving yards.
Pinner led the 'Cats with 141 yards on the ground and Jared Lorenzen was 19-32 for 183 yards and three touchdowns.
TRENDS IN THE SERIES
Indiana has had some success on the ground against Kentucky rushing for 160, 215, 232, 179 and 168 yards in the last five meetings. The Hoosiers have gained over 200 yards through the air just twice in the last five games.
The Wildcats have passed for over 300 yards in four of the last five meetings with the Hoosiers. The 'Cats ground attack has produced over 100 yards just twice in those five contests.
INDIANA VS. THE SEC
Indiana owns a 25-18-1 mark against SEC teams. The Hoosiers have faced Kentucky 33 times, Florida once, LSU three times, Mississippi State three times, South Carolina once, Tennessee once and Vanderbilt twice.
LAST SEASON AT HOME
Indiana won its first three home games last season over William & Mary, Central Michigan and Wisconsin. In those three wins, the Hoosiers outgained the opposition, 1,204-1,031 and outscored the opposition, 96-75.
MAKING PROGRESS ON THE GROUND
To gauge the success the Hoosiers are having on the ground this season one most understand how rushing statistics are kept in college football. A quarterback sack in the collegiate game results in negative rushing yards for a team. If you remove the eight sacks that resulted in 47 negative yards, Indiana has rushed for a total of 451 yards on 123 carries, an average of 3.67 yards per carry.
Against Indiana State the Hoosiers gained a net of 196 yards on the ground and averaged a season-best four yards per carry.
ESTABLISHING THE RUN
Indiana carried the ball 49 times last weekend. Last season the Hoosiers carried the ball that many times or more just twice (56 vs. Northwestern and 51 vs. Central Michigan)
RETURN GAME
Indiana posted 147 kick return yards last weekend, an average of 49 yards per return. It was the top return yardage game for the Hoosiers under Coach DiNardo.
LORENZEN'S SIZE COMPARED TO IU
Kentucky quarterback Jared Lorenzen weighs in at 260 pounds. The Hoosiers starting front four on defense averages 264.5 pounds per player.

NEWCOMERS A KEY FOR INDIANA
New faces factor heavily into Indiana's plans this season, evidenced by the fact that a total of 12 true freshmen have already seen game action. When the 10 redshirt freshmen who have played this year are included, a total of 22 Hoosiers have seen their first career action this season.

YOUNG GUNS IN THE SECONDARY
Against Indiana State the Hoosiers started three freshmen in the secondary, Will Meyers, Cedric Henry and Ryan Skelton.
MEYERS MAKING AN IMPACT
While injuries have decimated the secondary, they have opened a window for true freshman Will Meyers. A native of Chesterfield, Mo., Meyers saw a good deal of action against Connecticut, then shined against Washington, making a team-best 13 tackles and recovering a fumble that he forced. He followed that up with eight tackles, including two for loss, two forced fumbles and a sack against Indiana State.
His last two games have seen him post 21 tackles, three forced fumbles, a sack and a fumble recovery.
BEATTIE PUNTING WELL
Redshirt freshman Tyson Beattie has handled the punting duties well to start the season. He had just three punts against Indiana State, but all three were downed inside or at the 10-yard line, including one at the one-yard line and another at the three-yard line.
Beattie is averaging 37.5 yards per punt this season.
KICKING OFF THE GROSFIELD WAY
Kicker Troy Grosfield has quietly done very well in his first two games at the collegiate level. The kicker-turned-receiver-back-to-kicker has kicked off 13 times, recording four touchbacks and limiting the opponents to an average starting field position of the 22 yard line.

ROBERTSON CONNECTING
Kicker Bryan Robertson is in the midst of an impressive streak. The junior from Seymour, Ind., has connected on 12 of his last 14 field goal attempts, dating back to last year, with the only two misses being a 45-yarder last season and a scrambling 49-yarder as time was expiring in the first half at Washington.
He is 6-of-6 on extra points this season and has made his last eight extra point attempts.

NEW FACES ON DEFENSE
Indiana's top two tacklers are both newcomers to the squad this season. Junior College transfer Josh Moore leads the way with 30 tackles while true freshman Will Meyers ranks second with 28 tackles.

INDIANA'S SCHOLARSHIP NUMBERS
Indiana will take the field on Saturday with 63 players on scholarship.
With only five scholarship seniors on the 2003 roster and an incoming recruiting class of 25 scholarship players, it won't be until the 2004 season when Indiana is at the NCAA-maximum of 85 scholarship players on the roster.

A SMALL SENIOR CLASS
Indiana has just eight seniors on its roster: Adam Braucher (K), Matt Calvert (S), Matt Foss (S) Joe Gonzalez (S), Glenn Johnson (WR), Brian Lewis (RB), Duane Stone (CB) and Courtney Young (DL). Only five of the seniors are on scholarship.
NOT GREEN ANYMORE
True freshman BenJarvus Green-Ellis recorded his first 100-yard game against Indiana State. Green-Ellis rushed for 107 yards on 20 carries (5.3 yards per carry) and scored two touchdowns.
Teammate Chris Taylor added 92 yards. Last season Taylor became the first IU true freshman since Alex Smith (1994) to rush for 100 yards in a game.

Courtney Roby needs just 120 more receiving yards to crack Indiana's all-time top ten receiving yardage list. He has 1,368 career yards.

ASTROPLAY IS THE WAY
Indiana installed AstroPlay as the new playing surface at Memorial Stadium. The $446,000 project comes with a 10-year guarantee and contains 300,000 pounds of ground rubber IU is one of four Big Ten schools playing on modernized artificial turf.
TRENT GREEN GIVES BACK
The Indiana Football locker room receives a facelift for the 2003 season, thanks to the generosity of former Hoosier and current Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Trent Green and his wife, and IU alum, Julie (Lentz) Green. The Greens donated the funds to remodel the football lockerroom at Memorial Stadium this summer.
"My wife (Julie) and I have always wanted to give back to the University. This was a great way for us to do it. It's something we both feel strongly about," Trent Green said. "We just wanted to help be a part of that and get Indiana Football back to a place where we're going to bowl games, winning football games and generating excitement, not only around Bloomington, but also around the entire state in an effort to fill the stadium back up."
The facelift to the original 1986 facility will include renovating and modernizing the existing space with new carpeting, lighting and a new bulkhead ceiling along with the installation of custom-built oak wood lockers for 105 football players.
Trent Green, a 1992 graduate from the Kelley School of Business, ranks fourth on the school's all-time passing yardage list with 5,400 career yards. He is also fourth on the school's all-time all-purpose yardage list with 5,916 and ninth with 20 career rushing touchdowns.
