Bloomington, IN - The Indiana men's cross country team is ranked 17th in the NCAA men's cross country preseason poll. This marks the fourth straight year that Indiana is ranked among the top 25 programs in the nation. Last year, the Hoosiers started the season 23rd and climbed as high as 15th (Oct. 8 and 15).
Indiana kicked off the 2003 campaign at the Indiana Open on Aug. 29 and returns to action Sept. 19 at the Indiana Intercollegiates at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute. The Hoosiers will attempt to win their third straight Indiana Intercollegiates championship, which takes place on the same course that hosted the 2002 NCAA Championships.
IU head coach Robert Chapman relies on a veteran core of runners led by sophomore twin brothers Sean and John Jefferson. The Jefferson twins became the first IU rookies since Olympian Bob Kennedy (1988) to earn all-league honors in their inaugural campaign. John was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in cross country, the national runner-up in the indoor mile and qualified for the NCAA outdoor meet, while Sean qualified for the NCAA outdoor meet in the 5,000m and the finals of the USA Track and Field Championships in the 1500m. Sean Jefferson became just the seventh runner in school history to break 14 minutes for 5K.
