Bloomington, Ind. -- Two down, one to go. The Indiana volleyball team defeated a scrappy Southeast Missouri State (0-6) in four games, 30-32, 30-27, 30-15, 30-26 for its second victory in the TIS/Taylor Invitational Saturday afternoon. IU (4-1) will face Wisconsin-Green Bay (5-0) at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the tournament championship. Both teams enter the finale with 2-0 marks in the event.
The opening game was a back-and-forth contest with 20 ties and seven lead changes. The teams were tied at 5-5, 10-10 and 15-15 before IU took a 22-19 lead. SEMO stormed back, scoring 10 of the next 15 points to take a 29-27 lead. Indiana squared the match at 29-29, but the Othakians were too tough down the stretch, taking the opener 32-30. Freshman Ashley White (St. Charles/East) finished with a game-high six kills, keeping the Hoosiers in the game.
IU rebounded in the second game with a 30-27 victory, but it was not easy. Trailing 7-5, SEMO ran off six-unanswered points before junior Katie Pollom (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) halted the run with back-to-back kills, slicing the lead to two. The Othakians maintained their advantage at 19-16 when the Hoosiers tied it up with three-consecutive points. After the teams split the next 12 points, the Hoosiers went on a 4-0 spurt en route to closing out the game and tying the match, 1-1. Pollom led the way for IU with five kills.
Christina Archibald (Belleville, Ill./East) made sure Indiana made short work of SEMO in the third game. The junior pounded three kills accounting for three of the Hoosiers' first five points, staking IU to a 5-1 lead. The Othakians kept it close at 15-11 before the roof caved in. Indiana used a 5-0 and 7-0 run to blow the game open and take a 2-1 lead in the match with a 30-15 victory. Archibald finished the game with seven kills in 11 attempts.
"The intensity started picking up later the in the match," said Archibald. "I just wanted to come out and play harder because when one person picks it up, it affects everyone else. It is like a domino affect."
IU closed out the match with a 30-26 triumph in the fourth game. SEMO fought back after a tough third game, battling the Hoosiers to early 11-11 and 15-15 deadlocks. However, the Indiana offensive firepower was too much, as IU used an 8-2 run to take a commanding 23-17 lead. The closest the Othakians could get the rest of the way was four points, as senior Melissa Brewer (Bloomington, Ind./North) sealed the game and the match with her 16th kill of the afternoon.
"I am very happy to come out with a win," said Indiana head coach Katie Weismiller. "Southeast Missouri State is a very scrappy team. They played a great defensive game. I felt like we didn't really hit our stride. At times we saw some bright spots, but they kept us out of system a lot. Offensively, you look and we had a lot of kills, but I didn't think we were in system like we were last night. Hopefully we will come back tonight and control the ball a little more."
Archibald finished with a match-high 22 kills while Brewer, Pollom (13) and White (11) joined her in double-digits.
Junior Victoria Zimmerman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) continued her solid play distributing 61 assists and recording nine digs, while junior Beth Heimann (Decatur, Ind./Bellmont) led the Hoosiers with 19 kills, followed by Nikki Hill's (Muncie, Ind./Muncie Central) 16 kills.
"I think that Christina Archibald does a wonderful job when she takes over and gets the job done," said SEMO head coach Cindy Gannon. "I thought the setter (Victoria Zimmerman) did a wonderful job on the offense. I think they had some down times when they weren't quite putting it together, but at the same time they did come back. Good teams always come back and find a way to win."
