Hoosiers Defeat Iowa, Fall to Minnesota

Iowa City, Iowa -- The No. 25 Indiana men's swimming and diving team split a pair of Big Ten meets when they defeated Iowa 149-145 and fell to No. 6 Minnesota 172-126 this afternoon January 24. The Hoosiers record moved to 4-7 overall and 2-4 in Big Ten action.
"Our win over Iowa was one of the more satisfying wins I have gotten to watch. Everyone really wanted it and the guys really stepped it up, " said head swimming and diving coach Ray Looze. "We also won seven events against a great team like Minnesota. It was very satisfying for us to get a win and put up such a good showing against such tough competition."
Junior Murph Halasz picked up two first place finishes in both the 100 and 200-yard butterfly. In the 200 fly, Halasz earned an NCAA "B" cut and a season-best time of 1:47.84. In the 100-yard fly, Halasz also had a season-best time of 49.24. He capped off his day with a second place finish in the 200 IM with a season-best time of 1:52.08.
Sophomore Kevin Swander was the other double winner of the Hoosiers taking first place in both the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke. In the 100-yard breaststroke, Swander earned an NCAA "B" cut time and a season and personal-best time of 55.42. In the 200-yard breaststroke, he also has a season and personal-best time of 2:01.36. With his times, Swander moved to fifth on the all-time best list for the 100-yard breaststroke and sixth on the all-time best list for the 200.
In the sprint freestyle races, senior Mike Payne finished in third place with a time of 20.84. Freshman Colin Russell won the 500 free with a time of 4:34.31. He went on to place second in the 200-yard free with a season-best time of 1:39.42.
Freshman Ryan McNeill put his name in the Hoosiers record books with his performance in the 1000-yard freestyle. McNeill placed third overall with a time of 9:31.06. The time is the eight-fastest in school history.
Senior Matt Leach took third place in the 100-yard backstroke with a season-best time of 49.99. In the 200-yard backstroke, Leach placed fifth with a season-best time of 1:50.80. Sophomore Matt Jones placed fourth overall in the 200-yard backstroke with a season-best time of 1:49.35.
In the relay events, the team of Leach, Swander, Halasz and Anderrson took first place in the 200-yard medley relay with a season-best time of 1:30.00. The time was the fifth-fastest in school history and less than two seconds off the school record.
The 400-yard freestyle relay of junior David Winck, Andersson, Payne and Russell placed second with a time of 3:01.39. The time was a season best for the Hoosiers.
In the diving competition, junior Ryan Fagan placed second in the three-meter competition with a season and personal best 314.35 points. The scored was good enough for an NCAA Zone cut. In the one-meter competition, Fagan placed third with 268.55 points.
The Hoosiers return home for a meet against Purdue on February 7, 2004. Meet time is set for 1 p.m.
