IU Splits A Pair

Ann Arbor, Mich. - The Indiana water polo team opened the 2004 season going 1-1 on the first day of the Michigan Invitational. The ninth-ranked Hoosiers opened the Invite with a come-from-behind overtime victory over No. 17 Arizona State, 6-5. The premier, nightcap between IU and No. 10 Michigan was another classic battle between the rivals. The Wolverines and Hoosiers played a defensive battle, with Michigan pulling out a 4-2 win.
"Anytime you hold two of the top 20 teams in the country to a total of nine goals in two games, you are dong the right things on the defensive end," said Indiana head coach Barry King. "We just have to take these games as a learning experience. It is early in the season and as we progress, we will begin to find ways to score. But on the defensive end, we played real well tonight."
Against Arizona State, the Hoosiers needed a goal in the final minute of regulation to knot it up and send the game to overtime. IU would score the lone goal in the overtime to pick up a 6-5 win.
"It was nice to see the fortitude and drive to come back and get a victory against a tough Arizona State team," said King.
The Sun Devils took the lead with 2:33 left in the fourth period on a counter goal by Tessa Wyborny. They would hold the lead until a minute and a half later when IU tied it up.
With 55 seconds showing on the clock, senior Melissa Pietras scored to tie the match. After a teal on the defensive end by freshman Janis Pardy, sophomore Emily Schmitt had the ball on the right wing. Schmitt send the pass to the left and found Pietras in front for the tip in goal, evening the match at five.
Pardy gave IU the margin they would need in the first overtime. She scored 50 seconds into the first three-minute overtime period off the assist from Schmitt. It was Schmitt's third assist of the game, which was a career-high.
Junior goalkeeper Jessica Goldner and the defense held ASU scoreless in the two three-minute overtime periods. For the game, Goldner had four steals and eight assists.
Schmitt scored IU's first goal just 36 seconds in. Junior Krista Peterson drew a kickout and gave IU a 6-on-5 advantage. Peterson drew six kickouts in the game.
Peterson and Pardy each notched a pair of goals against the Sun Devils. Freshman Kristin Zernicke had a solid game with four steals and an assist.
In the nightcap, the Hoosiers fought back from a 1-0 first-period deficit to take a 2-1 lead at the half. Junior Kandace Waldthaler drew a four-meter foul and scored her first career goal on the penalty shot.
At the 4:21 mark of the second period, Pardy gave IU its first lead. She skipped a shot into the upper left corner for the goal. It was Pardy's third goal of the day.
Julie Nisbet tied it up for Michigan just 44 seconds into the second half. Sheetal Narsai netted the eventual game-winner with 4:23 remaining in the third. Michigan would tack on another score for the final margin.
"There is no such thing as a good loss, but this is not a bad one," King said. "We are very familiar with one another, and it was a very intense match. I don't know that the Midwest or East has seen the caliber of teams that played tonight."
Zernicke once again lead IU with six steals. For the day, she led IU with 10. Senior Kristy Streefkerk and Goldner each had three steals. Goldner also finished with seven save between the pipes.
IU continues the Michigan Invite tomorrow with two matches. They play No. 14 UC-San Diego at 10:30 a.m. before playing an exhibition match against Michigan State.
