Hoosiers Earn Comeback Win

Ann Arbor, Mich. -- The No. 9 Indiana water polo team picked up its second come-from-behind victory in as many days at the Michigan Invitational in Canham Natatorium. The Hoosiers knocked off No. 14 UC-San Diego, 9-6 by scoring five of the final six goals in the match. IU improves to 2-1 on the season.
"I was particularly happy with the way we responded to losing the lead in a game that we controlled most of the time," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "We got challenged and instead of playing to the level of what was going on, we raised it. We moved forward and were able to separate in the game, which is a good thing this early in the season. I really like the way the ladies are responding to the challenges that are out there."
The Hoosiers trailed 5-4 after the Tritons scored three of the first four goals of the second half. Indiana battled back as they reeled off the next four goals to push the lead to an insurmountable three.
Senior Melissa Pietras tied the match at five with 3:19 left in the third period. The Hudsonville, Mich., native scored on a skip shot to even it up. She would also tack on the final goal of the run putting IU ahead 8-5 with 2:28 remaining in the match. She scored with the Hoosiers on the six-on-five advantage after junior Krista Peterson drew a kickout.
Freshman Janis Pardy gave Indiana the lead for good at the 1:52 mark of the third period. Junior Kandace Waldthaler drew a kickout in the two-meter. With the Hoosiers on the advantage, Peterson skipped a pass across to Pardy, who scored from the left side. It was Pardy's second goal of the game and period. She had knotted the score up earlier in the period at four on an identical play with Waldthaler drawing the kickout and Peterson assisting on the goal.
Pardy's fellow Canadian Junior National teammate, freshman Kristin Zernicke notched her first two career goals in the final period of play. Zernicke also had a pair of steals on the afternoon against the Tritons.
"I think both groups were tired more in the second half than they were on the first day of competition," King said. "Each squad had two and a half game in and were a little bit more tired. When that happens things tend to open up a little bit more. There is a little more space and people are not closing it as quickly. We just took advantage of the opportunities that were presented because of that. In addition to that, we got Janis and Kristin to look to score. They were taking the shots that they had been passing up in the two prior games and in the first half. Good things resulted from those two looking to score."
Peterson kept the Hoosiers afloat in the first half netting all three IU goals. She notched the first goal with a spin move in the first minute of play. Peterson scored her second goal of the afternoon with 1:07 remaining in the first period. The Portland, Ore., native drew the kickout and then played give-and-go with Waldthaler before finding the back of the net.
Peterson sent IU to the locker room with a 3-2 lead as she scored with just four seconds remaining in the first half. Waldthaler drew the kickout in the two-meter. Pardy send a cross-pool pass to Peterson, who netted the goal on a shot from the four-meter. On the afternoon, Waldthaler helped the Hoosiers get the six-on-five advantage by drawing three kickouts, all of which resulted in IU goals.
Peterson equaled a career-high with three assists against the Tritons. Peterson has now registered three assists on six different occasions. Pietras, Waldthaler and Pardy each picked up assists as well for the Hoosiers. Pardy rounded out another solid match, leading the team with three steals. Zernicke, senior Kristy Streefkerk and sophomore Bridget McKeon each had two steals to help Indiana's defense cause. Junior goalkeeper Jessica Goldner finished with six saves against the Tritons while facing 16 shots.
In the second game of the day, the Hoosiers defeated Michigan State, 11-6 in an exhibition. The match does not count toward IU's official record or statistics due to Michigan State's club standing. The Spartans finished last season ranked second in the national club poll. IU has never lost to Michigan State in 19 meetings. Freshman Kara Woolley led the Hoosiers charge netting five goals, including the game winner. Peterson and Zernicke each added a pair in the win over Michigan State.
The Hoosiers will return to action after a week off when they play in the UC-San Diego Arena Invitational in San Diego, Calif. The Hoosiers will open the tournament against No. 15 UC-Irvine on Feb. 7. The Cream and Crimson will compete in four-team pool with the winner advancing on into the championship pool. Regardless of where IU places in the initial four-team pool, they will play four matches on Feb. 7-8.
