BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Four players on Indiana's national champion men's soccer team have been selected to College Soccer News' All-America teams, the publication recently announced.
Junior Ned Grabavoy headlines the group as he was named to the publication's All-America second team. Grabavoy led the Hoosiers with 33 points (11 goals, 11 assists) this season in 21 games. The New Lenox, Ill., product missed four matches in NCAA Tournament play while playing with the United States U-20 team in the World Youth Championships in the United Arab Emirates, but returned for the national championship game against St. John's on Dec. 14. Grabavoy promptly scored the first goal of the game on a free kick in the 16th minute. He was a unanimous first-team All-Big Ten selection and earned first-team All-America honors from the National Soccer Coaches' Association of America and College Sports Television.
The trio of Jed Zayner, Julian Dieterle and Jacob Peterson were among the 33 rookies from around the country named to three All-Freshman teams. Zayner, who started all 25 games at sweeper for Indiana, was named to the first team. The 2003 Co-Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Year assisted on one goal in his inaugural collegiate season. Zayner also made the College Cup All-Tournament team.
Dieterle garnered second-team All-Freshman honors. Dieterle started all 25 matches at marking back for the Hoosiers in 2003. He scored two goals and was also a Big Ten All-Freshman team selection. Dieterle also earned Big Ten Defensive Player-of-the-Week honors on Oct. 20.
Peterson, who hails from Portage, Mich., notched a spot on the third team. He ranked third on the team with 19 points on seven goals and five assists. Peterson scored the game-winning goal in Indiana 2-1 victory over St. John's in the NCAA title match and was named the College Cup's Most Outstanding Offensive Player. He was a second-team All-Big Ten pick and also earned Big Ten All-Freshman honors.
Despite a 2-3-4 start, Indiana finished the 2003 season with a 17-3-5 record overall and sent head coach Jerry Yeagley into retirement with a sixth national championship. The Hoosiers also won the Big Ten Conference regular season and tournament titles.
