Cream Rises To The Top In Intrasquad Meet, 166-96

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana men's swimming and diving team opened up the 2004-05 campaign with the annual Cream and Crimson meet on Friday, Oct. 1 at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. The Cream rose to the top with a 166-96 victory as they won 11 of the 16 events.
In the initial event of the competition, Cream jumped out to an 11-6 lead when Mike Jones, Thomas Clavier, Murph Halasz and Colin Russell captured the 200-yard medley relay title with a 1:32.38 clocking, while the Crimson (Ben Hesen, Kevin Swander, Nick Walkotten, Kyle Ruth) claimed second in 1:33.02 and third (Sean Gibson, Ronnie Hehn, Scott Tanner, Drew Ossakow) with a 1:37.56 time. Cream's Niles Madison, Brian Ellsworth, Alec Haley and Ryan Millard) rounded out the IU effort in the 200 medley with a fourth-place 1:42.07 clocking.
Opening up the individual swims, Crimson's Sergiy Fesenko posted what would have been the 10th-fastest 1,000-yard freestyle time in school history in an official meet with a 9:24.75 to seize the event title, while John Kevin Koehler of the Cream placed second with a 9:26.73. Cream also took the next two spots in the marathon-swim with Ryan McNeill taking third in 9:39.52 and Paul Sigfusson finished in fourth with a 9:50.10. Crimson closed out the event with fifth- (Alex Brunfeldt, 9:54.12), sixth- (Norman Ference, 10:08.76) and seventh-place (Joe Cramer, 10:17.02) finishes.
Cream's Russell took the 200-yard freestyle crown with a 1:40.19, just a second off the NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:39.07, while teammate Bryant finished as the runner-up with a 1:42.07 clocking. Fesenko took third place for the Crimson in 1:42.75, while Cream's Lee Houchin wound up in fourth with a 1:43.95 time. Crimson's David Winck ended up in fifth with a time of 1:45.46, while Cream's Brian Ellsworth took sixth with a 1:47.66. Crimson's Jeff Chambers was the final swimmer with a 1:48.52.
In the 100-yard backstroke, Cream's Todd Patrick was victorious with a 50.58 clocking to place just ahead of Crimson's Swander, who finished in 56.45. Baldwin swam a third-place time of 59.68 for the Crimson, while Haley clocked a fourth-place 1:01.40 for the Cream. Meanwhile, Millard took fifth with a 1:03.43 for the Cream, while Crimson's Hehn registered a 1:03.48 to take sixth. Cream's Martin closed out the event with a 1:06.50 for seventh.
Halasz continued the momentum built from an incredible season in 2003-04 by taking first in the 200-yard butterfly with a 1:52.28 for the Cream. The two squads traded positions the rest of the way with Crimson's Jensen in second (1:54.27), Cream's McNeill in third (1:57.73), Crimson's Tanner in fourth (1:57.95), Cream's Bryant in fifth (2:04.03) and Crimson's Ference in sixth (2:04.16).
In the final event before the break, Russell captured his third title of the meet with a 20.89 clocking for the Cream. Crimson's Ruth (2nd, 21.29) and Winck (3rd, 21.87) claimed the next two spots, while Cream's Houchin (4th, 22.49) and Ellsworth (5th, 22.51) wound up the top five. Crimson's Ossakow clocked a sixth-place 22.56, while Cream's Millard swam a seventh-place 22.79.
In the first event out of the break, Cream took the top two spots in the 100-yard freestyle with Patrick clocking a 45.57 and Clavier posting a 46.62. Crimson's Winck ended up sandwiched in third with a time of 47.84, while Cream's Houchin finished in fourth (48.90) and Millard took fifth (49.74). Ossakow rounded out the event in 50.13.
In the 200-yard backstroke, Jones claimed his first crown of the event with a 1:53.61 for the Cream to out-swim Jensen (2nd, 1:53.88) to the wall. Koehler (3rd, 1:58.02) and Bryant (4th, 1:59.91) captured the next two places for the Cream, while the Crimson swept the last three spots with Hesen in fifth (2:01.69), Chambers in sixth (2:03.43) and Gibson in seventh (2:04.46).
Swander pocketed a title for the Crimson in the 200-yard breaststroke after clocking a 2:08.02, while Cream's Haley took second with a 2:09.99. Crimson's Baldwin finished in third in a time of 2:10.13 to push ahead of Cream's Madison (4th, 2:10.34). Crimson's Hehn took fifth (2:22.74) in front of Cream's Martin (6th, 2:25.22).
Fesenko continued a strong debut for the Hoosiers with his second title of the contest in the 500-yard freestyle after a 4:38.00 performance for the Crimson. Cream locked down the next three spots with Koehler in second (4:40.59), McNeill in third (4:45.83) and Sigfusson in fourth (4:51.07). The Crimson took the last three slots with Chambers in fifth (4:51.85), Cramer in sixth (4:55.03) and Brunfeldt in seventh (4:56.52).
In the final event before the last break, Clavier recorded a sub-50 time of 49.92 in the 100-yard butterfly for the Cream to beat Crimson's Walkotten (50.88) to the wall. Cream's Halasz placed third with a 51.30, while Crimson's Hesen (52.90) and Tanner (53.74) finished in fourth and fifth, respectively. Martin took sixth for the Cream with a 58.71.
Patrick picked up his third title with a 1:53.57 in the 200-yard IM for the Cream, while Crimson's Jensen took second with a 1:55.12. Jones placed third for the Cream with a 1:55.99, while Baldwin finished in fourth with a time of 1:59.40. The Cream's Halasz (2:00.77) and Haley (2:01.81) ended up in fifth and sixth, while the Crimson claimed the last two spots with Hehn (7th, 2:07.93) and Ference (8th, 2:09.55).
In the last event of the meet, Cream claimed a two-second triumph in the 400-yard freestyle relay as Bryant, Houchin, Russell and Koehler clocked a 3:08.45. Crimson's Swander, Winck, Walkotten and Fesenko took second with a 3:10.76, while Ellsworth, Sigfusson, Madison and Patrick ended up in third for the Cream in 3:19.75. Crimson's Tanner, Ossakow, Chamber and Jensen were the final finishers of the evening with a 3:26.93
Next up, the reunited Cream and Crimson play host to Texas in the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center on Friday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m.
