Shootout At The Legends Release (10/1/04)

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Head Coach Clint Wallman's golf team heads to Franklin, Ind. to compete at the Shootout at the Legends. The Hoosiers open the tournament with 36 holes Monday. The first 18 holes will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. CT, before continuing on with the second round later in the evening. IU then concludes play on Tuesday with a double tee start at 8 a.m. The course will play to a yardage of 6,207, par 72.
The Field
The field will consist of six Big Ten teams as well as other regionally-ranked teams. Joining the Hoosiers from the Big Ten are Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Northwestern. Also competing in the two-day event will be Kent State, Campbell, Notre Dame, Eastern Michigan, Toledo and Illinois State.
Last year At The Legends
Former Hoosier Karen Dennison successfully defended her title at the Shootout at the Legends. Dennison shot a final round 69 to finish at 213, her second best three-round total of her career and tied for second with Erika Wicoff on the Indiana individual three-round low record.
As a team, Indiana shot a final round 293 to finish in second place at 879. It marked the Hoosiers best finish at the Shootout at the Legends; as it broke the Indiana 18, 36 and 54-hole low-round totals for the tournament. Indiana also set a new all-time three-round low total, breaking the previous mark by six strokes.
Indiana was able to pick up six strokes on Kent State during the final round but finished two back, as Kent State was able to defend its team title with an 877.
Coach Clint Wallman's Thoughts
On the upcoming tournament:
"We had a great week of practice and we are eager to see how we do in this tournament. Each tournament we have shown signs of improvement and hopefully we can continue that trend."
On the strength of the field:
"This is going to be a really strong field. There are six Big Ten teams and several ranked teams from the Central Region. It is going to provide a great test and should be a measuring stick to see how much we have improved."
On the team's mentality:
"This group of girls are really starting to learn how to play together as a team. We have had some success this season and hopefully we can keep the momentum going."
Redfearn Has Career-Best Tournament At Mary Fossum
IU junior Molly Redfearn blazed the course to a career-best tournament performance at the Mary Fossum Invitation over Sept. 18-19. The Racine, Wisc., native fired a 226 (75-75-76) en route to a second-place tie with Illinois State's Katie Laehn.
The effort shattered each of her personal-best marks as every round on the weekend eclipsed her previous career-low of 77 set at the 2002 Wolverine Invitational and the 2002 Legends Shootout. Her 36-hole tally of 150 also bettered her previous standard of 157 set at the 2002 Lady Northern Invitational and the 2002 Legends Shootout.
Additionally, her total of 226 demolished her former best tournament outing at the 2002 Legends when she fired a 234. Last, but certainly not least, her second-place tie crushed her highest placement of a 23rd-place tie at the 2002 Wolverine Invitational.
Wallman Replaces Carmichael At Helm
First-year head coach Clint Wallman replaces the legendary Sam Carmichael, who retired last May after 23 years at the helm of the Hoosier program. During a 21-year span from 1984-2004, Indiana was the only team in the Big Ten to place among the top three 17 times, and Carmichael was named Big Ten Coach of the Year eight times.

Hoosiers Close Strong at Lady Northern Invitational
The Indiana women's golf team opened the fall season at the Lady Northern Invitational at the University of Michigan Golf Course. The Hoosiers finsihed 14th overall with a score of 969 (324-327-318).
Lissa Putnam was the top finisher for the Hoosiers, shooting 242 (85-80-77). Bethany Brunner and Molly Redfearn finished right on her heels tied for 68th with matching tallies of 244. Brunner posted an 80-84-80 run while Redfearn recorded an 83-83-78 effort.
Also participating for the Hoosiers were Elaine Harns, who finished 77th (78-87-83-248), Kendal Hake, who placed 93rd (83-85-95-263) and Katie Carlson who finished 95th overall (95-80-93-268).

The Hoosiers then competed at the Mary Fossum Invitational at the Forest Akers West Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich. IU finished with a 10th-place 960 (319-314-327), while junior Molly Redfearn provided a major highlight for the Hoosiers with a career day on the links.

Other Hoosier finishers include senior Lissa Putnam who posted a career-best effort of her own with a 240 (79-84-77) to tie for 40th place, while classmate Bethany Brunner tied for 62nd place with a 248 (84-79-85). Senior Katie Carlson wound up in 82nd place by recording a 264 (92-82-90) playing as an individual, while freshman Kendal Hake registered a 268 (87-92-89) to tie for 84th place.
