IU Travels to Wisconsin, Northwestern

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Hoosiers (6-11, 0-6 Big Ten) head back out on the road this weekend for a pair of conference match-ups. First up, Indiana tangles with Wisconsin on Friday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m., in Madison. In 2003, IU dropped both matches with the Badgers. Wisconsin picked up the first meeting, 3-2, in Bloomington, while downing Indiana, 3-1, in Madison on Nov. 28 to end IU's season.
Indiana then battles Northwestern on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m., in Evanston. Indiana split the 2003 season series with the Wildcats, falling on the road, 3-1, before upending Northwestern, 3-0, in Bloomington.
Last week, IU suffered a pair of losses at home to then-No. 9 Ohio State, 3-1, and then-No. 6 Penn State, 3-0.
Senior Katie Pollom paced IU last week with 22 kills to post a 3.14 kills per game average, while sophomore Tasha Arsenych set up most of Pollom's kills with 63 assists. Pollom also came up big at the net for eight blocks, while sophomore Lindsay Cochrane swept the floor with 20 digs.
Wisconsin heads into Friday's match with a 9-5 record, including a 3-3 mark in the Big Ten. The Badgers suffered a 3-0 loss to then-No. 3 Minnesota on Oct. 8, before knocking off Iowa, 3-0, on Oct. 9.
Against the Golden Gophers, sophomore Maria Carlini led Wisconsin with a career-high-tying 13 kills, while senior Jill Odenthal added 10 kills of her own. Additionally, freshman Jocelyn Wack paced the Badgers with 21 digs. In their match-up with Iowa, Carlini continued her career-weekend with a personal-best 17 kills, while Odenthal knocked down 11. Sophomore Katie Lorenzen posted 27 helpers, while Wack notched 21 digs.
Junior Sheila Shaw leads the Badgers with 183 kills, while connecting at a .308 clip. freshman Jackie Simpson serves as the primary setter for Wisconsin with 478 of the team's total 712 assists.
Northwestern enters the week with a 6-10 record, including a 1-5 league ledger. The Wildcats opened last weekend successfully by downing Iowa, 3-2, on Oct. 8. Northwestern then fell to then-No. 3 Minnesota, 3-0, on Oct. 9. Prior to facing off with Indiana on Oct. 16, the Wildcats will compete against Purdue on Oct. 15.
Against the Hawkeyes, freshman Courtnie Paulus registered a career-high 28 kills as classmate Lindsay Anderson drilled 21 kills herself. Senior Drew Robertson recorded a double-double with 64 assists and 11 digs, while Paulus notched a double-double as well with 14 digs. In the tilt with Minnesota, Robertson posted her second consecutive double-double with 38 helpers and 11 saves, while Anderson found the floor for 12 kills. Defensively, junior Christie Gardner registered 17 digs.
Sophomore Julie Purcell paces the Wildcats with 151 kills, while Paulus has a 3.52 kills per game average. Gardner serves as the primary defender with 231 digs, while freshman Brittney Aldridge boasts a plus-40 block total with 48 rejections.
