BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana men's and women's swimming and diving teams play host to Evansville on Friday, Oct. 15 at 3 p.m. in the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
The two squads will face off in a 14-event meet. The events in this week's competition will be the 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 freestyle, the 100 and 200 backstroke, the 100 and 200 breaststroke, the 100 and 200 butterfly and the 200 IM as well as the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays. IU's divers will also take part in non-scoring events under meet rules at 3:30 p.m.
Last time out, the University of Evansville men's swimming and diving team finished second in the Dennis Start Relays at Notre Dame.
The men's team of Andy Burnett, Eric Abbott, Brian Barnes and Phil Lubbehusen finished third place in the 400 breast relay with a time of 4:37.03. Sophomore Keith Pietrzak and freshman Andy Ringwelski swam in the 1000 free (two legs) relay and posted a 10:38.10 time to grab third. Derek Zehr, Andy Burnett, Erik Richardson and Rob Maksimuk combined for a 1:41.33 in the 200 medley relay to claim second.
LAST TIME AGAINST THE ACES
The IU men's team knocked off Evansville for the fourth consecutive season with a 164-116 triumph at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
Leading the way for the men's team was freshman Colin Russell. Appearing in his first collegiate meet, the Barrie, Ontario, native claimed victories in three events. He won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 9:32.73 in addition to the 50-yard freestyle (21.48) and the 100-yard breaststroke (57.60).
Junior Richard Bryant added two victories, posting a time of 1:56.30 in the 200-yard butterfly and netting a 1:43.80 in the 500-yard freestyle.
Junior Ryan Fagan won the one-meter diving competition with a score of 281.77 as the men's team posted victories in 10 of the 16 events they competed in.
TEXAS TIES
Indiana sports a strong tie to Texas as Head Coach Ray Looze's initial collegiate coaching experience came in Austin. During the 1990-91 season, Looze served as a graduate assistant for the Longhorns while pursuing his Master's in Education from the University of Texas.
WILL THE REAL UT PLEASE STAND UP?
Coincidence? Indiana opens and closes its home dual meet season with a UT on the competitive slate. First, the Hoosiers battle Texas on Oct. 8 at 1 p.m., in the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center before concluding the home ledger against Tennessee on Jan. 7 at 4 p.m. That's a lot of orange in the schedule.
LOVE AFFAIR WITH THE LONE STAR STATE
Head Coach Ray Looze must have enjoyed his time in the Lone Star State as three Texas teams are on this year's docket. IU opened its Texas Three Step by dropping a tough battle to Texas, 170-130, on Oct. 8 in Bloomington. Indiana will then travel to College Station, Texas on Oct. 29 to swim against Texas A&M before tangling with SMU in Dallas on Oct. 30.
Additionally, since taking the helm at IU in 2002-03, Looze has added Texas flavor to the slate each season. Last season, the Hoosiers fell to Texas A&M in Bloomington, 180.5-117.5. In 2002-03, IU tied for ninth at the Texas Invitational held in Austin.
SEVEN STRONG, WILL WE SEE EIGHT?
Dr. Jeff Huber, Indiana men's and women's diving coach, was selected as U.S. Diving's National Coach of the Year for the United State Olympic Committee's Coach Recognition Program for an incredible seventh consecutive time.
The accolade closed out an amazing year for Huber as the Indiana diving program continued its dominance on the national scene by claiming the program's 11th consecutive U.S. Combined (men and women) National Championship. The men's and women's programs joined to outdistance second-place Auburn by over 100 points.
NOT HIS SWAN(DER) SONG
Junior Kevin Swander highlighted Indiana's performance at the 2004 ConnocoPhillips Summer National Championships in Stanford, Calif., by taking first place in the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:02.81.
Swander's national title capped an incredible season that witnessed the Greenwood, Ind., native earn Big Ten Swimmer of the Championship honors, All-American laurels in the 200-meter medley relay at the NCAA Championship and a seventh-place finish in the 100-meter breaststroke at the Olympic Trials.

Junior Mike Jones offers a special treat to fans who attend Indiana swim meets as he sings the national anthem before each home competition.
CARLTON TABBED DIVER OF THE WEEK
Senior Marc Carlton was named Diver of the Week by the Big Ten for the week of Oct. 11.

Junior Kevin Swander was named Co-Swimmer of the Week by the Big Ten for the week of Oct. 11.
