Hoosiers Fall to Wisconsin, 3-2

MADISON, Wis. - In its first contest of a quick two-match road trip, Head Coach Katie Weismiller's volleyball squad dropped a nailbiter to Wisconsin, 3-2, to drop to 6-12 on the season and 0-7 in Big Ten play. The Badgers claimed the 31-33, 30-23, 30-16, 22-30, 15-9 triumph on Friday night in Madison, Wis., to improve to 10-5 overall and 4-3 in conference action.
Seniors Katie Pollom and Christina Archibald paced IU with 14 kills apiece. Pollom connected at a .267 clip with four digs and seven blocks, while Archibald had six digs and three blocks. Additionally, freshman Lauren Ditteon found the floor for 12 kills of her own. Sophomore Tasha Arsenych had 43 assists, while freshman Juli Pierce swept the floor with a career-high 25 digs. Junior Mandy Eberle served as a defensive juggernaut with eight blocks.
In game one, Indiana proved that they came to play by out-hitting Wisconsin, .136 to .127 to come out with a 33-31 victory and take a 1-0 lead in the match. A 7-1 run to pull Indiana ahead, 16-12, in the game wound up being too much for Wisconsin to overcome.
In the second stanza, Wisconsin countered to knot the match at 1-1 by connecting at a .256 clip compared to IU's .065 rate.
Wisconsin extended its lead to 2-1 in the third frame by overpowering Indiana, 30-16, with a .467 to -.192 hitting percentage margin.
The Hoosiers bounced back in the fourth game to tie the match at 2-2 with a 30-22 conquest to send the match into a decisive fifth game by turning the tables on the Badgers with a .267 hitting percentage versus Wisconsin's .022. A late, 6-1, run gave the Hoosiers a decisive edge in the frame.
Wisconsin responded by out-hitting IU, .643 to .167, in a 15-9 conquest of the Hoosiers in the final game to claim the match, 3-2.
Junior Sheila Shaw led a quartet of Badgers with double-digit kill efforts after drilling 22 kills. Junior Aubrey Meierotto added 14 kills, while senior Jill Odenthal and sophomore Maria Carlini put away 12 apiece. Freshman Jackie Simpson served as Wisconsin's primary setter with 41 helpers, while classmate Taylor Reineke dominated the net with 12 total blocks.
Next up, the Cream and Crimson tangle with Northwestern on Oct. 16 in Evanston, Ill., at 7 p.m.
