Hoosiers Shuffle Evansville Purple Aces, 160-87

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana moved its dual-meet record to 1-1 this season with a 160-87 conquest of Evansville on Oct. 15 in the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington, Ind. The Hoosiers claimed 11 out of 14 event titles, while a pair of Indiana freshmen Ben Hesen and Nick Walkotten paced IU with two event crowns each.
"We were just trying to take a look at some off events for us this meet," Head Coach Ray Looze said. "We had a chance to demonstrate some team spirit in front of our parents. Evansville was a good opponent and I am thankful that they came up to race us."
In the opening event of the meet, the Hoosiers jumped out to a 15-2 lead when Walkotten, junior Kevin Swander, Hesen and senior David Winck claimed the event title in the 200-yard medley relay with a 1:32.79. The team of junior Mike Jones, junior Thomas Clavier, sophomore Kyle Ruth and sophomore Lee Houchin took second with a time of 1:33.24, while Evansville's squad of Derek Zehr, Andy Burnett, Robert Maksimuk and Zachary Brown took third in 1:37.19.
Indiana pushed its lead to 31-5 in the 1,000-yard freestyle when sophomore Colin Russell captured the title in 9:34.24. The Hoosiers took the next two spots as freshman Alex Brunfeldt came in second with a 9:35.81, while freshman Jeff Chambers finished in third with a 9:50.16. Evansville picked up the last two scoring slots when Andy Ringwelski took fifth with a 10:33.04, while Jeff Yoder ended up in sixth in 11:26.14.
The Hoosiers extended their lead to 47-8 in the 200-yard freestyle as freshman Todd Patrick nearly made an NCAA provisional qualifying mark with an event-title 1:40.89, while freshman John Kevin Koehler took second in 1:44.51. Sophomore Matt Jensen wound up IU's top-three effort with a 1:45.07 clocking. Evansville claimed the last two scoring spots with Maksimuk in sixth at 1:53.87, while Keith Pietrzak took seventh in 2:02.02.
Indiana lengthened its lead to 61-13 in the 100-yard backstroke as Walkotten took first in 52.33. The Purple Aces cracked the top two with Zehr's second-place 53.07 effort, while IU's Houchin took third in 53.46. Senior Murph Halasz took fourth with a 54.48, while Evansville's Ringwelski rounded out scoring in the event with a sixth-place 1:06.32.
In the 100-yard breaststroke, IU vaulted out to a 77-16 lead as Hesen captured the crown with a 59.11 clocking, while sophomore Kyle Ruth took second in 59.92. Senior Niles Madison closed out IU's top-three performance with a 1:00.92. Evansville picked up the final scores with Burnett placing fourth in 1:01.36, while Phil Lubbehusen took sixth in 1:05.78. Also of note, freshman Ronnie Hehn posted a career-low time of 1:01.79 to take fifth.
Indiana moved its lead to 93-19 in the 200-yard butterfly when Winck placed first in 1:56.03, while freshman Alec Haley took second in 1:59.97. Sophomore Ryan McNeill posted a 2:02.51 to finish in third. Evansville took fourth and fifth, respectively, as Erik Richardson touched in 2:13.48 and Yoder came in with a 2:15.15.
The Hoosiers stretched their lead to 109-22, when Patrick picked up the crown in the 50-yard freestyle with a 21.02 clocking, while Houchin took second in 21.31. Senior Brian Ellsworth rounded out the top-three for IU in 21.93. Brown (22.69) and Brian Barnes (23.25) took fifth and sixth, respectively, for Evansville.
After a short 10-minute break, the Hoosiers struck out to a 125-25 lead in the 100-yard freestyle as Hesen claimed the crown in 47.39. IU took the next two spots with Swander coming in at 48.03 and Ellsworth finishing in 48.53. Evansville claimed three points with Burnett in fifth at 49.98 and Brown in sixth with a 50.17. Also of note, sophomore Ryan Millard posted a personal-best time of 49.18 in a non-scoring effort.
In the 200-yard backstroke, IU pushed its lead to 134-42 with Madison winning the event in 1:56.73. Patrick, however, swam the fastest time in the event with a 1:53.63 in a non-scoring performance. Evansville took second and third with Zehr touching in 2:00.71 and Ringwelski clocking a 2:10.50.
The Hoosiers moved to a 147-38 lead in the 200-yard breaststroke as Winck claimed the event title in 2:13.57. IU's Jensen took second in 2:13.62, while Evansville picked up the last three scoring slots. Lubbehusen finished in third with a 2:24.70, Richardson placed fourth in 2:25.54 and Abbott took fifth in 2:48.43 for the Purple Aces.
After the 500-yard freestyle, Indiana led by 160-43 after Russell snagged the event crown in 4:34.10. Brunfeldt posted a career-best time of 4:41.47 to pick up second place. Evansville's Yoder placed third in 5:25.99, while Heath took fourth for the Purple Aces in 5:49.47.
In the 100-yard butterfly, IU wound up with a 160-56 lead after Ruth swam the fastest time in a 51.07 non-scoring effort. Maksimuk claimed the event title in 54.50 for Evansville, while Brown took second in 55.47.
In the final individual event of the meet, IU maintained a 160-72 lead as Clavier swam the fastest time in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:55.39. Evansville picked up all the points with Zehr touching in an event-title winning 2:03.65, while Richardson took second in 2:09.47 and Lubbehusen finished in third in 2:13.51.
In the last event of the evening, IU concluded the meet for a 160-87 triumph as Clavier, Patrick, Ossakow and Ellsworth posted the fastest time in the event with a 1:25.13 in a non-scoring effort. Evansville's Burnett, Maksimuk, Pietrzak and Barnes won the event in 1:31.51, while Rindwelski, Sutton, Heath and Yoder took second in 1:39.47.
Next up, the Cream and Crimson roll out to the Lone Star State for a pair of dual meets from Oct. 29-30. First, Indiana takes on Texas A&M in College Station, Texas on Oct. 29 at 3 p.m., before battling SMU in Dallas on Oct. 30 at 2 p.m.
