BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Hoosier Fans, the wait is finally over. At the stroke of midnight on Saturday morning the 2004-05 Indiana men's and women's basketball seasons officially got underway with both teams participating in the annual Midnight Madness festivities at Assembly Hall in front of about 13,000.The rowdy and boisterous crowd welcomed the Hoosiers as the clock struck midnight onto the court. Fans dressed in red and white cheered members of both teams as they were introduced under a dim arena with the spotlight following them to the state symbol and IU logo at mid-court.
The night got off to a high-flying start as sophomore forward Pat Ewing Jr. looked to defend his 2003-04 slam dunk title against senior forward Marco Killingsworth, freshmen guards A.J. Ratliff and Robert Vaden and freshman forward James Hardy. Ewing wouldn't be denied as he won the contest for the second-straight year with a 540-degree one-handed flush on his final dunk. The Marietta, Ga., native won with a perfect score of 40, receiving 10 point scores from all four judges.
In the spot shot contest the team of sophomore forward Roderick Wilmont and sophomore center Sarah McKay won with a score of 61.
In the championship round of the three point contest senior guard Ryan Tapak made 15 triples en route to defeating Suhr (10 three-pointers), claiming the men's championship. In the women's final, junior guard Cyndi Valentin made nine shots from beyond-the-arc to down freshman guard Nikki Smith (6 three-pointers) for the title.
In the overall three-point final between the men and women's champion, Valentin was looking to claim her third-straight overall title. Tapak got hot at the end of the round and hit three balls in the final rack in edging Valentin 13-to-10.
In the men's scrimmage, Killingsworth led the Crimson to a 50-39 win over the white team with 12 points, three rebounds and a pair of assists. Junior guard Marshall Strickland added eight points and Ewing chipped in with six. For the white squad, freshman forward D.J. White poured in 12 points and senior guard Lewis Monore had six points and dished out three helpers.
