Indiana Upends Northwestern, 3-2

EVANSTON, ILL. - Head Coach Katie Weismiller's volleyball squad shut down Northwestern's offensive attack on Oct. 16, with a season-high 12 service aces to outlast the Wildcats, 3-2, and improve to 7-12 on the season and 1-7 in Big Ten play. Northwestern suffered the 31-29, 22-30, 28-30, 30-27, 17-15 defeat on Saturday night in Evanston, Ill., to fall to 7-11 overall and 2-6 in conference action.
Senior Christina Archibald led a trio of Hoosiers with double-digit kill tallies with 22 put-aways of her own. Archibald added four service aces, tied for her career high, and eight digs as well as two block assists. Freshman Lauren Ditteon posted a double-double with career highs in both kills (15) and digs (11). Senior Katie Pollom drilled 12 kills of her own, while adding three service aces, five digs and six block assists. Additionally, sophomore Tasha Arsenych served as the primary setter with 56 helpers, while freshman Juli Pierce swept the floor with 26 saves. Classmate Christine Nilles chipped in 22 digs of her own.
In game one, Indiana jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the match by out-hitting Northwestern, .170 to .163. The Hoosiers came back from an early 6-1 hole to capture a 31-29 victory.
In the second stanza, Northwestern countered to knot the match at 1-1 by connecting at a .353 clip compared to IU's .184 rate for a 30-22 triumph.
Northwestern lengthened its lead to 2-1 in the third frame by eking out a 30-28 win by out-hitting IU, .173 to .122.
The Hoosiers bounced back in the fourth frame to tie the match at 2-2 with a 30-27 conquest to send the match into a decisive fifth game. After an Archibald kill locked up the score at 26-26, Indiana went on a 4-1 run to seize the win in the fourth game.
Indiana wasted no time in the fifth game by jumping out to a 6-1 lead. The Hoosiers then held on to the margin to knock off Northwestern, 17-15, and snap their 10-match losing streak.
Freshman Lindsay Anderson led a quintet of Wildcats with double-digit kill efforts after putting away 19 kills. Senior Drew Robertson posted a rare triple-double with 11 kills, 57 assists and 27 digs, while junior Christie Gardner recorded 31 saves.
Next up, the Cream and Crimson come back to Bloomington to play host to Minnesota on Oct. 22 at 7 p.m., before battling Iowa on Oct. 23 at 7 p.m.
