Patrick Named Big Ten Swimmer Of The Week

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - After helping Indiana defeat the Evansville Purple Aces, 160-87, in the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center on Oct. 15, freshman Todd Patrick garnered Big Ten Swimmer of the Week recognition for the week of Oct. 18.
"We have been very happy with Todd thus far," Head Coach Ray Looze said. "He has shown the kind of potential and versatility that we had projected for him. It was fun to see him swim so well in some of his off events against Evansville. He has got a bright future in the sport and both Coach (Brian) Barnes and I look forward to helping him realize a wide array of success in the future."
Patrick snared his first Swimmer of the Week accolade, and IUís second consecutive honor to open up the season, after claiming a pair of event titles as well as swimming the fastest time in two other non-scoring efforts against Evansville. The Chesterfield, Mo., native nearly made an NCAA provisional qualifying mark with an event-title 1:40.89 in the 200-yard freestyle. Additionally, Patrick picked up the crown in the 50-yard freestyle with a 21.02 clocking. He also swam the fastest time in the 200-yard breaststroke with a 1:53.63 in a non-scoring performance. The rookie then concluded the meet by swimming the second leg in the 200-yard freestyle relay as the squad of Thomas Clavier, Patrick, Drew Ossakow and Brian Ellsworth posted the fastest time in the event with a 1:25.13 in a non-scoring effort.
Previously, junior Kevin Swander captured Co-Swimmer of the Week after tallying an event title and a trio of second-place finishes in the Hoosiers' first dual meet of the season against perennial powerhouse Texas.
Next up, the Cream and Crimson roll out to the Lone Star State for a pair of dual meets from Oct. 29-30. First, Indiana takes on Texas A&M in College Station, Texas on Oct. 29 at 3 p.m., before battling SMU in Dallas on Oct. 30 at 2 p.m.
