Indiana Prepares for Purdue

The Indiana women's soccer team will conclude its four-game road swing as the Hoosiers travel to rival Purdue and DePaul over the weekend.
LAST WEEKS RECAP
Indiana went 0-1-1 in its last full weekend of conference play. With the tie, IU clinched an automatic bid to the Big Ten Tournament, held at Ohio State from Nov. 3-7.
The Hoosiers started the weekend with a heartbreaking 1-0 loss in overtime to Northwestern. With just under three minutes left to play in the first extra period, the Wildcats lined up for a corner kick. The ball sailed right into the box and a scrum occurred in front of the net. NU's Ashleight Garmon was able to take control of the ball and put a shot just by Hoosier goalie Lauren Fabbro for the game-winning goal.
On Sunday, senior captain Kim Grodek scored her seventh goal of the season in dramatic fashion as the Hoosiers forged a 1-1 tie at No. 24 Illinois. Grodek's goal came at 89:45 of the second period sending the contest into overtime.
With only 20 seconds left in the game, the Cream and Crimson packed the box for their final scoring opportunity. Sophomore Megan Pipkens started the game-tying play with a throw in using her patented flip throw. The throw ricocheted off junior Kristin Zmijewski who then fed the pass to Grodek for the late goal.
ON THE HORIZON
The home as well as the regular season finale will take place next Friday, Oct. 27, as the Hoosiers host Butler at 7 p.m. "Senior Day" festivities will take place before the start of the game as IU honors its lone senior Kim Grodek. Indiana will then prepare for the Big Ten Tournament held at Ohio State from Nov. 3-7.
SCOUTING PURDUE
Purdue comes into the weekend at 7-8-0, 3-6-0 in the Big Ten. Friday's game is crucial for the Boilermaker's hopes of making the Big Ten Tournament. With a win, Purdue can clinch a spot in the tournament, but a loss will have the Boilermakers scoreboard watching to see if Michigan State pulls out a victory against Michigan. A loss by the Spartans automatically gets Purdue a bid to the tournament.
Purdue has had some trouble scoring all year long tallying only 15 goals on the year, third fewest in the conference. Purdue is also tied for ninth in points (36) and seventh in shots (213). Purdue has done a good job on defense allowing only 17 goals on the year.
Six players have taken over 20 shots for Purdue, but freshman Parrissa Eyorokon leads the Boilermakers in scoring, with eight points and three goals. She has also taken a team-high 27 shots with 13 being on goal.
Sophomore Lauren Mason is the starting goalkeeper for the Boilermakers. Mason has played in all 15 games with 11 starts and sports a 1.52 goals against average and a .772 saves percentage.
"THE GOLDEN BOOT" SERIES HISTORY
Indiana and Purdue play for the "Golden Boot". The "Boot" is awarded to the winning team of the regular season contest. For each win an emblem of a `P' or an `I' is added to it. After winning the first ever meeting 1-0 in 1999, IU has lost five in a row in the series, including two matches in the Big Ten Tournament. Indiana is winless in West Lafayette dropping the only two games they have played there.
SCOUTING DEPAUL
DePaul comes into the contest at 8-7-1, 4-4-1 in Conference USA. They have won two straight matches pitching shutouts in both games.
The Blue Demons are one of the highest scoring teams in Conference USA tallying 38 goals on the year. The Offense is led by two 20-point scorers in junior midfielder Julianna Sitch and sophomore forward Lea Hill. Sitch leads the team with 23 points on eight goals and seven assists, while Hill is the top goal scorer with nine goals, and also has posted three assists for 21 points. Hill does all that from the bench as she has played in all 16 games, but with only two starts. Junior midfielder Erin Walter leads the club in assists with eight, to go with four goals on the year.
DePaul has one of the most experienced goalkeepers in the country in senior Lindsay Deason. Deason has been a starter since she was a freshman and this year she has started all 16 games. She sports a 1.51 goals against average and a .781 saves percentage. She entered the year as the schools all-time leader in goals against average with a 1.12 mark
SERIES HISTORY
This will be the second ever meeting between Indiana and DePaul. The Hoosiers recorded a 1-0 win in Bloomington in 2002.
IU CLINCHES TOURNY BID
Indiana clinched its third straight appearance in the Big Ten Tournament. Since head coach Mick Lyon took over in 2002, IU has made the Big Ten Tournament in all three of his years. IU had gone three straight year's prior to that without participating in the conference postseason event.
STATE TIDBITS
The Hoosiers have posted a 12-20-1 record against intrastate schools. IU is also 10-9-4 lifetime against Illinois based schools. IU also sports a 10-3 record against Conference USA, including a 5-0 mark at home and a 3-3 record on the road.
IU TOPPLES GOAL TOTAL
The Hoosiers have scored 25 goals this year, eclipsing the 22 goal total of a year ago. The Cream and Crimson now need only one more to break the 25-goal mark which would be a new high in the Mick Lyon era.
