Hoosiers Fall to Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Senior wide receiver Courtney Roby became the school's all-time leading receiver; however, it was not enough as Indiana dropped a 30-7 decision at Ohio State on Saturday in Big Ten football action. Roby caught five passes for 79 yards and now has 2,382 yards in his career, breaking Ernie Jones (1984-87) all-time yardage mark of 2,361 yards.
Ohio State running back Antonio Pittman had 144 yards rushing and a touchdown to lead the Buckeyes. Quarterback Troy Smith, making his first career start for OSU, went 12-of-24 for 161 yards and two touchdowns while adding 58 yards on the ground.
The Hoosiers (2-5, 0-4 Big Ten) were led by quarterback Matt LoVecchio's 156 yards in the air on 14-of-25 passing. Running back Chris Taylor came off the bench to lead the Hoosiers on the ground with 53 yards on nine carries, while Roby's 79 yards led all receivers.
The Buckeyes made a statement offensively from the outset, scoring touchdowns on their first two drives and tallying points on their opening four possessions to take a commanding lead.
Ohio State (4-3, 1-3 Big Ten) opened the scoring when they took the opening drive 80 yards on six plays in 1:54, which was highlighted by a 59-yard touchdown from quarterback Troy Smith to wide receiver Ted Ginn. The drive was initially halted by the Hoosier defense; however, a fumble recovery by IU was overturned due to instant replay when it was ruled the Ohio State running back was ruled down by contact prior to losing the football.
On the Buckeyes ensuing possession, Smith threw a five-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Santonio Holmes, giving OSU a 14-0 lead with 6:02 remaining in the opening quarter. It marked the second straight time Smith took Ohio State over 80 yards, this time going 10 plays for 85 yards in 3:33.
The Hoosiers would respond with their very next drive, going 80 yards in 11 plays and 4:38, capped by quarterback Matt LoVecchio's one-yard touchdown run to cut the OSU lead to 14-7. Roby led IU on the drive with two receptions for 55 yards, including a 42-yard reception to put IU deep into Ohio State territory.
After a high-scoring opening quarter, the Buckeyes would be the only team to score over the next 15 minutes. Ohio State's Mike Nugent would connect on two field goals of 28 and 52 yards, respectively, on the next two drives to give the Buckeyes a commanding 20-7 advantage at the half.
The Buckeyes would control the second half and tack on 10 more points in the final half to seal the win. Nugent hit a 35-yard field goal in the third quarter, while a 28-yard touchdown run by Pittman in the fourth quarter resulted in the final score.
