IU Blanks Iowa, 3-0

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Head Coach Katie Weismiller's volleyball squad continued its recent roll of success in which it has won two out of its last three matches by blanking Iowa, 3-0, to improve to 8-13 on the season and 2-8 in Big Ten play. The Hawkeyes suffered their ninth straight defeat in the 30-23, 30-22, 30-24, whitewashing to fall to 9-13 overall and 1-9 in conference action.
Senior Christina Archibald posted her 35th-career double-double and second of the weekend with 13 kills and 11 digs, while freshman Juli Pierce swept the floor with 14 saves. Senior Katie Pollom dominated at the net with a season-high nine total blocks, including a season-high three solo blocks. Additionally, sophomore Tasha Arsenych served as Indiana's primary setter with 34 helpers.
In game one, Indiana blitzed Iowa's defense to the tune of a .389 hitting percentage, while forcing seven Hawkeye errors and holding Iowa to just .140 hitting. The Hoosiers took a 1-0 lead with the 30-23 triumph in the first frame that featured four ties and four lead changes.
In the second stanza, IU scorched Iowa by out-hitting the Hawkeyes, .279 to .026 to extend its lead to 2-0 in a 30-22 conquest. The second game was never in doubt as there was only one lead change.
The Hoosiers closed out Iowa, 3-0, in the final game with a 30-24 victory. Even though the Hawkeyes were able to corral somewhat the IU offense and hold it to .154 hitting, Indiana countered with a stifling defense of its own as Iowa hit -.100 in the frame. Overall, Indiana held an opponent under .100 hitting in a match for just the second time this season.
Sophomore Tiana Costanzo paced Iowa with eight kills, while senior Pam Kavadas served as the Hawkeyes' primary defender with 15 digs. Additionally, junior Justeen Patton tallied 18 assists.
Next up, the Cream and Crimson head back out on the road for an Oct. 22 match-up with Penn State in University Park, Pa., at 7 p.m., before rolling into Columbus, Ohio to battle Ohio State on Halloween at 7 p.m.
