Hoosiers Battle Tough Conditions, Field in Oregon

BANDON, Ore. - Facing heavy rain and one of the toughest golf courses in the country, the Indiana men's golf team sits in a tie for sixth place after one round at the Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge. Play was suspended through five holes in the second round and the tournament has been shortened to a 36-hole tournament with the teams closing out round two on Tuesday.
The tournament is being hosted by Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, the third ranked golf course on Golf Magazine's Top 100 Golf Courses to Play list behind Pinehurst and Pebble Beach.
Seven Big Ten teams and seven Pac-10 teams are entered in the field, and the Hoosiers are tied for second among Big Ten teams with 304. IU is tied with No. 20 Minnesota and is six shots behind Northwestern, who leads all Big Ten teams at 298. The Wildcats are tied for third place overall with No. 10 USC. No. 19 UCLA leads the tournament and holds a five-shot advantage over No. 17 Arizona State following a 3-over-par 291.
"It was a tough day out there. These were as tough conditions as you'll ever see on a golf course," said Indiana head coach Mike Mayer.
IU sits ahead of No. 21 Purdue and three Pac-10 powerhouses, including defending national champion California, Arizona and Oregon.
Coming off of his sixth career collegiate title, senior Jeff Overton led the Hoosiers with a 1-over-par 73. Golfweek's fifth-ranked golfer is tied for sixth place with five other golfers and sits three shots behind the leader, Bryson Young of Northwestern.
In addition to Overton, senior Heath Peters and freshman Santiago Quirarte came through with solid rounds. The duo fired 3-over-par 75s and finished the round in a tie for 19th place.
"Jeff handled the conditions very well," said Mayer. "He started with a double bogey and really fought back. Heath finished with a double bogey but played strong throughout the day, as did Santiago. We are playing pretty well."
Rounding out the Hoosier lineup, junior Brad Marek carded an 81, and junior Scott Seibert ended the day with an 84.
Indiana returns to the links for the completion of the Challenge tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. (PDT). The teams will continue playing where they stopped when play was suspended in round two.
"The weather is not supposed to be too much better tomorrow, so we will be ready for any conditions we are going to face and we will see what we can do," said Mayer.
