HONOLULU, Hawaii - The Indiana women's golf team finished the opening two rounds of the Kent Youel Invitational on Tuesday afternoon, carding a team score of 628 (311-317) to sit in 13th position heading into Wednesday's final round. The opening round 311 was a season-low for the Hoosiers, who are playing in their final tournament of the fall season.
"I am really excited about how we played," head coach Clint Wallman said. "We had some players who have achieved new personal bests and as a team, I think we showed we can play with some of the better teams in the country. We still have some work to do, but the talent is certainly there." UCLA's Charlotte Mayorkas fired a three-under-par 69 in round one and a two-under 70 in round two, which was good enough to give her sole possession of first place. Trailing Mayorkas by one stroke is teammate Amie Cochran, who posted back-to-back 70s in the first and second rounds. Action will continue Wednesday morning as the teams get set for the third and final round at Kapolei Golf Course. The Hoosiers were led by junior Molly Redfearn who recorded rounds of 79 and 76 to shoot a 155 and is tied for 42nd. Senior Bethany Brunner followed Redfearn after carding a 157 (73-84) and is in a tie for 50th overall. Juniors Lissa Putnam (78-81) and Katie Carlson (81-78) both fired rounds of 159 and are tied for 54th, while freshman Kendal Hake is tied for 69th with a 165 (83-82) in the 79-player field.
Carlson's 36-hole tally of 159 surpasses her previous best of 161 set in the team's previous tournament, The Shootout at the Legends. The Livonia, Mich., native also tied her career-low round of 78 set at the same tournament. Additionally, Brunner tied her 18-hole best of 73, which was also set at The Shootout at the Legends on Oct. 4-5.
UCLA has managed to distance itself from the 15-team field by 16 strokes through two rounds. The Bruins sit atop the team leaderboard with a 36-hole total of 568, eight strokes below par. Arizona State, who sits in second place with 584, is their closest competitor. Oregon (592), Oklahoma (593) and UC-Irvine (597) round out the top five, respectively.
