Hoosiers Claim First Big Ten Victory

Bloomington, Ind. -- The Indiana field hockey team withstood a late charge by Ohio State to claim its first Big Ten victory of the season, 3-1, Friday afternoon at the Mellencamp Pavilion. With the win, the Hoosiers raised their record to 11-7 on the season, while Ohio State fell to 8-9.
IU got onto the board first in the eighth minute of action, as freshman Frederique Meeuwsen intercepted an Ohio State pass at midfield, then weaved through the Buckeye defense and placed the ball into the net for her first of two goals on the day.
Ten minutes later, IU extended its lead to 2-0 as Meeuwsen received an assist from junior Lesley Wiler.
"I'm just feeling more confident in my game," Meeuwsen said. "My teammates have done a great job of putting me in positions to score."
IU's third goal of the first half came in the 28th minute as junior Nikki Orciuch scored her fifth goal of the season off of an assist from sophomore Lydia Schrott.
Ohio State ended the Hoosiers' hopes of a shutout as Cammie Trainer scored a goal in the 65th minute.
Indiana controlled Ohio State's offense as the Hoosiers didn't allow a Buckeye shot until the 58th minute of action.
Senior goalkeeper Katie Kanara withstood 12 Buckeye shots in the final 12 minutes to post her 11th win of the season.
"In the first half, we executed extremely well," head coach Amy Robertson said. "We did a good job of taking advantage of our opportunities. In the second half, we played a little passive and didn't execute the game plan. We need to find a way to put two halves together."
The Hoosiers return to action on Sunday, Oct. 31, against Saint Louis. The final home game of the year starts at 2 p.m. at Mellencamp Pavilion.
