GD: "Even though Northwestern holds the edge on this series historically, we have played them close the last couple of years. We are back to work today, trying to prepare, so we can play a good game on Saturday."
On Northwestern in general:
GD: "Offensively, their attack is one that really causes you a lot of problems. They ran back a kickoff versus Minnesota and brought one back against Ohio State, so they do some things in the kick game. I thought they really played well on defense against Ohio State. They played really aggressive."
On areas that have improved at the halfway point of the season:
GD: "We are getting more turnovers on defense, including more interceptions and more fumble recoveries. Our scoring defense is improved. We are getting off the field more now on third down. Our pass efficiency defense has improved. Kickoff return continues to make progress. We are a little better in net punting than a year ago and our field goals are much better than they were. Offensively, we are throwing the ball better and our passing efficiency is better. We are doing a good job spreading the ball out and spreading the field."
On Northwestern quarterback Brett Basanez:
GD: "He is the prefect quarterback for that system. He is incredibly efficient in the things that they ask him to do."
On the spread offense:
GD: "I think that you need to protect against big plays. The type of offense where you get spread out, it's a real concern. The more guys we get around the ball the better."
On the schedule for the bye week:
GD: "We will spend part of it recruiting. Seven of the 10 coaches will be on the road recruiting. The players will have Sunday, Monday and Tuesday off. We will practice on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The players will have Saturday off, and we will have a regular week starting on Sunday. That is tentative. That is what we have done in the past."
