Old Oaken Bucket Moments

Indiana and Purdue will play for the Old Oaken Bucket on Saturday, Nov. 20, at noon in West Lafayette, Ind. It will mark the 107th meeting between the two schools and the 80th duel for the Old Oaken Bucket.
Here is a look at five memorable games in the series.
Indiana vs. Purdue
November 24, 2001
Indiana scored 13 first-half points on a 52-yard touchdown run by Levron Williams and a 10-yard touchdown scamper by Antwaan Randle El and held off Purdue for a 13-7 Big Ten victory at Memorial Stadium.
The Hoosiers scored on their first possession, as Randle El completed an 11-yard pass to Travis Haney for an IU first down on the first play from scrimmage. Williams then rushed for 4, 6, and 6 yards on three straight carries, for another Hoosiers' first down. He would take his fourth consecutive carry 52yards into the end zone and Adam Braucher's extra point gave IU a 7-0 advantage.
After going three and out on his first possession, Boilermaker quarterback Kyle Orton fumbled on his second turn with the ball to give possession back to IU. On their ensuing possession, the Cream and Crimson scored on a 10-yard run by Randle El to lead 13-0 after the extra point failed.
Purdue scored its lone touchdown on a 14-yard pass from Orton to John Stadeford at 10:52 of the third quarter.
Indiana would make two key defensive stops during the fourth quarter. The first came with Purdue on the Indiana 8-yard line. Orton threw two incomplete passes and then completed a 7-yard strike to the Indiana 1-yard line. On fourth down, IU's Martin Lapostolle stopped Montrell Lowe's rush from the goal line to keep the Hoosiers advantage at 13-7. The Cream and Crimson secured the win by breaking up Orton's pass on fourth-and-17, from the IU 24-yard line, with 1:47 to play in the game.
Williams finished with a game-high 94 yards on 21 carries for the Hoosiers, while Orton set a Memorial Stadium record for passing attempts with 62.
Indiana at Purdue
November 23, 1996
In Head Coach Bill Mallory's final game, Indiana scored 23 unanswered second-half points, including a pair of touchdowns by Alex Smith, en route to a 33-16 win against Purdue at Ross-Ade Stadium in West Lafayette, Ind.
Both teams would exchange first-half field goals and Purdue staked to a 10-3 lead on a 90-yard pass play from Rick Trefzger to Brian Alford at 14:48 of the second quarter. IU would even the game at 10-10 on a 13-yard interception return by Kywin Supernaw at 5:11 of the quarter.
Trefzger and Alford would connect again on a 22-yard scoring play to give the Boilermakers a 16-10 advantage after the extra point failed.
Smith scored his first touchdown at 3:16 of the third quarter on a 2-yard plunge to put the Hoosiers ahead 17-16. The Cream and Crimson pushed their margin to 24-16 after a 51-yard blocked-punt return by Nate Davis at 12:06 of the fourth quarter.
IU added to its lead at 7:48 of the quarter, as Adewale Ogunleye and Benyard Jones sacked Trefzger in the end zone for a safety.
The Hoosiers would score their final touchdown on a 7-yard scoring run from Smith for the game's final margin. Smith finished the game with 164 rushing yards on 31 carries. Alford closed the game with an Old Oaken Bucket series record of 162 receiving yards.
The game also marked the final time that Purdue head coach Jim Colletto would be on the sidelines for the Boilermakers.
Indiana at Purdue
November 19, 1994
After four lead changes in the second half, Indiana scored last, and defeated Purdue 33-29 in front of 62,839 in West Lafayette, Ind.
IU scored on its first possession of the game when quarterback John Paci connected with Edward Baety for a 7-yard touchdown strike.
Purdue would even the game on its ensuing possession with an 8-play, 58-yard drive capped by a Corey Rodgers 3-yard touchdown run.
The two squads traded touchdowns as the game stayed even at 14-14. Indiana's Alex Smith rumbled 66 yards for his first touchdown of the game. The Boilermakers responded as Lee Brush returned an IU fumble 85 yards for the score early in the second quarter.
The Cream and Crimson took the lead on a 2-yard scoring run by Paci. The extra point failed as IU went into the halftime break with a 20-14 advantage.
Purdue took its first lead of the game, 21-20, at 12:48 of the third quarter on a Mike Alstott 1-yard touchdown run. On Indiana's next possession, the Hoosiers went 76 yards on nine plays and took a 26-21 lead, at 8:57 of the third, on Paci's 3-yard run, his second touchdown of the game. The two-point conversion was unsuccessful.
Less than three minutes later, the lead flip-flopped again as quarterback Billy Dicken scored on a 20-yard run and completed his two-point conversion pass to Burt Thornton for a 29-26 Purdue lead.
After a Purdue fumble, Indiana took possession of the ball on the Boilermakers 24-yard line. On the first play of the drive, Smith was knocked back for a loss, his second carry went 24 yards, and his final carry of the drive was a 1-yard touchdown run. The extra point was good and the score of 33-29 proved to be the final margin.
Smith finished the game with 245 yards on the ground, the third-best rushing performance in the Old Oaken Bucket Series.
Indiana at Purdue
November 19, 1988
Anthony Thompson scored three touchdowns and Barry Way added a pair as Indiana cruised to a 52-7 victory over Purdue in front of 67,861 in West Lafayette, Ind.
Thompson scored on a 1-yard run at 6:45 of the first quarter. Purdue answered at 4:57 of the first on a 47-yard touchdown pass from Shawn McCarthy to Ernie Schramayr. The quarter ended with the game tied at 7-7.
IU would explode in the second quarter and score 24 unanswered points. Thompson scored his second touchdown of the game from seven yards out at 10:43 of the second. Less than three minutes later, Brian Dewitz returned an interception 34 yards to put the Cream and Crimson ahead 21-7.
Tom Bolyard's 9-yard pass to Rob Turner with 20 seconds to play in the quarter pushed the IU advantage to 28-7. Purdue fumbled the ensuing kickoff, which allowed Pete Stoyanovich to kick a 34-yard field goal and give Indiana a 31-7 halftime lead.
The third quarter was more of the same for Indiana as Thompson scored on a 4-yard run, his third of the game, and Way had a 1-yard run of his own to widen the lead to 45-7.
Way scored his second touchdown of the game on a 5-yard run for the game's final margin of 52-7.
Thompson finished the game with 167 rushing yards on 25 carries.
Purdue at Indiana
November 25, 1967
Indiana scored 19 first-half points and forced Purdue into four turnovers en route to a five point win in front of 52,770 at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, Ind.
Indiana scored first at 7:34 of the opening quarter on a 7-yard Harry Gonso to Jade Butcher pass. Purdue evened the score at 7-7 on a 9-yard touchdown run by Williams.
Indiana scored 12 points in the second quarter to take a 19-7 advantage into the halftime break. After a Purdue fumble, Michael Krivoshia scored on a 1-yard plunge to cap an 8-play, 63-yard drive, the extra point kick failed. Indiana capitalized on Purdue's second fumble of the quarter, as Terry Cole rushed 63-yards for the final score before halftime.
The Boilermakers scored their second touchdown of the game with 4:50 to play in the third quarter on a 1-yard run by Perry Williams.
Purdue's fourth fumble of the game was a costly one, as the Boilermakers drove 78 yards to the Indiana 2-yard line. Williams rushed the ball on second-and-goal and was hit by Kenneth Kaczmarek, who forced the ball loose, and IU's Mike Baughman recovered it on the 1-yard line to hold the lead and seal the victory.
Cole finished with 155 yards on 15 carries, while Williams ran for 124 yards on 24 carries and Purdue's Leroy Keyes rushed for 114 yards on 20 carries.
