Indiana Drops 3-2 Heartbreaker to Iowa

Freshman Lauren Ditteon led a quintet of IU players with double-digit kills totals by drilling a career and match-high 20 put-aways. Seniors Katie Pollom and Christina Archibald each recorded 14 kills, while freshman Christine Nilles tallied 12 kills. Junior Mandy Eberle rounded out the double-digit performance with 10 kills of her own. Additionally, sophomore Tasha Arsenych totaled 60 helpers, while freshman Juli Pierce notched 19 digs.
The first frame proved to be as far from an indicator of how the match would progress as may be possible as Iowa stifled the Hoosier offense by out-hitting IU .289-.000 to take a 1-0 lead with a 30-16 triumph. There was more of the same in the second stanza as the Hawkeyes jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a 30-19 victory in which Iowa connected at a .444 clip.
The Cream and Crimson, however, erupted out of the intermission and would not go quietly into a loss. In the third game, the Hoosiers cut the gap to 2-1 with a thrilling 30-27 conquest that featured 14 ties and five lead changes.
In the fourth frame, IU continued a remarkable comeback to knot the match at 2-2 with another 30-27 win in another nailbiter as the squads traded the lead seven times as well as tied the game on 12 other occasions.
Unfortunately, Indiana fell in the decisive fifth game as Iowa claimed the 3-2 win with an incredibly close 15-13 victory.
Senior Carolyn Giese paced Iowa with 16 kills, while junior Justeen Patton posted 60 assists. Additionally, senior Pam Kavadas swept the floor with a match-high 24 digs.
Next up, Indiana closes out its travels with a Nov. 20 tilt against No. 5 Minnesota in Minneapolis at 7 p.m.
