Hoosiers Drop Season Finale

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Kyle Orton threw for 522 yards and six touchdowns, setting a school record with 530 total yards, to lead Purdue to a 63-24 victory over Indiana on Saturday. With the loss, the Hoosiers close the 2004 campaign with a 3-8 record overall and 1-7 in Big Ten play.
"The obvious thing is that it was a bad day to play bad," IU head coach Gerry DiNardo said. "Purdue played a heck of a ballgame. Our offense just couldn't get going, and our defense just couldn't stop them. I don't know that there was too much that was positive for us today. This was just about the worst day we've had as a team; it kind of takes away from the progress we've made. It was an ugly day, but the world is not going to cave in, even though it felt like it a few times out there."
Sophomore running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis led Indiana with 15 carries for 94 yards. Quarterback Matt LoVecchio was 21-of-34 for 239 yards with one touchdown in his final college game. Wide receiver Courtney Roby ended the day with six catches for 61 yards and a touchdown. The Indianapolis, Ind., native closed his illustrious career with 170 receptions for 2,521 yards - both school records - and 14 touchdowns.
Green-Ellis produced IU's longest rush from scrimmage this season, 53 yards, at 1:37 of the first quarter. The run was the longest of Green-Ellis' career; his previous long was 39 yards vs. Purdue last season.
Orton finished the day 33-of-54 and topped Drew Brees' record for total offense of 524, which came against Minnesota on Oct. 3, 1998. Orton also tied Brees' school marks for most passing yards, set in that Minnesota game, and touchdown passes, which Brees did twice.
Purdue (7-4, 4-4) started fast and never slowed down. Orton led the Boilermakers to touchdowns on their first three possessions, including a 52-yard TD pass to Kyle Ingraham when Indiana's Herana-Daze Jones slipped, and a 23-yarder to Taylor Stubblefield. Brandon Jones added a 4-yard TD run.
Indiana closed to 21-10 when Victor Adeyanju sacked Orton, forcing a fumble, and Will Lumpkin picked it up and raced 74 yards for a TD early in the second quarter. It was Lumpkin's second TD of the season and extended the Hoosiers school record to five defensive touchdowns on the season. Lumpkin also scored on a 42-yard interception return against Minnesota (10/30).
However, that is as close as the Hoosiers would get, as Orton threw three more touchdowns in the first half - a 21-yarder to Dorien Bryant, a 17-yarder to Stubblefield and a 26-yarder to Ingraham - to make it 42-10 at halftime.
Orton then connected with Stubblefield on a 12-yard TD early in the third quarter.
After Purdue pulled Orton early in the fourth quarter, Bryant scored on a 62-yard run, and backup quarterback Brandon Kirsch fired a 61-yard TD to Charles Davis.
Ingraham finished with 11 catches for 209 yards, and Bryant had five receptions for 131 yards.
The Boilermakers finished with a Big Ten record 763 yards in total offense and scored 60 points for the first time since 1913.
