Overton Finishes 12 at All-America Classic

EL PASO, Texas - Indiana men's golfer Jeff Overton tied for 12th place at the 30th Annual Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic at the par 71, 6,817-yard El Paso Country Club. The senior from Evansville, Ind., finished with a three-round, 1-over-par 214 (72-67-75) total.
Nicholas Thompson (Georgia Tech), earned medalist honors, defeating Matthew Rosenfeld (Texas) on the first playoff hole. The two finished the three rounds tied at 9-under-par (204).
Overton became the fourth Hoosier to compete in the tournament. He joined former IU stars Kelly Roberts (1974), Steve Rogers (1977) and Randy Leen (1997).
The 2004 field was filled with a record-high 30 golfers due to 42 All-Americans who were eligible to compete at the event. The largest previous field was in 1983 and again in 1997, when 27 golfers competed in the Golf Classic. Along with Overton, 19 other players in the field earned preseason All-America honors.
Throughout the years, many Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic competitors have gone on to pursue successful careers in the Professional Golfers' Association of America and on the PGA Tour. Some of the past champions include Ricky Barnes (2000), Notah Begay (1994), David Duval (1991), Matt Kuchar (1999), Davis Love III (1984), Chris Nallen (2003), Jerry Pate (1974) and Tiger Woods (1995).
Prior to the tournament, Overton finished eighth in the Titleist Longest Drive Contest with a drive of 303 yards. Tyler Leon of Oklahoma State won the competition with a winning drive of 327 yards.
Overton will be featured on The Golf Channel's College Central show on Wednesday, Nov. 23, at 10 p.m. EST.
