IU Defeats Bellarmine, 101-64

Bloomington, Ind. - Sophomore forward Patrick Ewing Jr. came off the bench to record game-highs of 22 points and nine rebounds in just 19 minutes of action, and led the Indiana men's basketball team to a resounding101-64 victory over Division II foe Bellarmine at Assembly Hall
on Thursday night. The contest was the exhibition opener for both teams.
In addition to Ewing's performance, three other Hoosiers reached double figures. Freshman forward D.J. White accounted for 15 points, while junior guards Bracey Wright and Marshall Strickland each collected 11 points. Another freshman, Robert Vaden, also played well, contributing seven points, eight rebounds and a game-high five assists in 29 minutes. Strickland also chipped in four assists and a game-best four steals.
As a team, the Hoosiers shot well from the floor, hitting 36-of-65 (.554) field goals, and going 20-of-24 (.833) from the charity stripe. IU also took advantage of the height difference in the paint, outrebounding the Knights 41-29 on the evening.
Ewing, who finished the night 7-of-9 from the field, came up large in the first half, taking advantage of his height and athleticism. With IU holding onto a slim 15-11 lead with 11:44 remaining in the opening 20 minutes, the Marietta, Ga., native scored the next 10 points for the Hoosiers, including two dunks, to give his team a 25-14 advantage. The Hoosiers would reach their largest margin in the half of 17 points, 41-24, at the 3:08 mark on a White jumper, before going into the locker room up 16, 48-32.
Indiana came out on fire in the second half, running away with the game in the opening minutes. After Bellarmine's Matt Miller connected on a layup at the 16:06 mark to cut the IU lead to 11 at 52-41, the Hoosiers went on a 30-2 spurt, including scoring 17 consecutive points, over the next 10:40 to take a controlling 82-43 advantage with 5:26 remaining in the contest. The Hoosiers would eventually lead by as much as 42 late in the second half.
Matt Pait led the Knights with 17 points, while Marcus Flynn had 13 and Kyle Thrasher added 12. Bellarmine, who will next play at Indiana State on Nov. 7, shot .368 (21-of-57) from the floor and .364 (12-of-33) from three-point range.
The Hoosiers will next play their final exhibition game on Friday, Nov. 12, at 8 p.m. against SIU-Edwardsville. Indiana will welcome a familiar face back for that game when former IU swingman Marty Simmons, who is the head coach at SIU-Edwardsville, will return to Assembly Hall. The game can be heard live on the IU radio network. Indiana will open the regular season on Tuesday, Nov. 23, at 6 p.m. against Indiana State.
