Bloomington, Ind. , - Senior guard Brendan Plavich hit a shot from half court as time expired to propel Charlotte to an improbable 74-73 win over Indiana on Wednesday night in Assembly Hall. The game moved at a frantic pace and featured 10 lead changes and eight ties, including three of each in the final five minutes of the contest.Plavich took the half-court pass from junior forward Curtis Withers, spun and heaved a half-court shot that found the bottom of the net for the 49ers. The officials, at first, called the shot no-good, but after reviewing the play for several minutes, it was determined that Plavich had released the shot before time expired.
The Hoosiers had four players score double-figures led by junior guard Bracey Wright's 19. Freshman forward D.J. White had a solid game with a career-high's in points (18) and rebounds (9). Sophomore forward Pat Ewing, Jr. scored 13 and freshman forward Robert Vaden added 11. Ewing tied White with a team-high nine rebounds.
Plavich led all scorers with 21 points, including six treys from beyond-the-arc. He was one of four 49ers to total double figures. Plavich also set an Assembly Hall record with 17 three-point attempts. The old record of 14 was shared by two players.
Charlotte (7-2) jumped ahead, 10-6, four minutes into the game, on back-to-back three-pointers Plavich.
The 49ers pushed their advantage to 29-18, the largest of half, on a pair of trey's by Goldwire.
Indiana (2-6) would claw its way back into the game thanks in large part to the play of White and junior forward Sean Kline. A pair of buckets down in the post by Kline and a three-pointer from Wright cut the margin to 29-25 with 6:22 left.
White grabbed an offensive rebound and made the score 33-31 with a lay-up at the 1:27 mark. White scored the final six points of the half for the Hoosiers, and a team-high 12 in the frame, but the 49ers went into the break with a 35-31 edge.
With 13:01 to play in the second half, Vaden made a lay-up after corralling a half-court length, baseball-type pass from Ewing to cut the Charlotte margin to 47-45, forcing Head Coach Bobby Lutz to call a timeout.
White scored down on the block to tie the game at 49-49 and on their next possession Wright put the Hoosiers ahead 51-49 with 10:01 to play. It was IU's first lead since a 6-4 margin at 17:56 of the first half.
Wright dropped home a floater in the lane, but Plavich made another triple to cut the lead to 53-52 with 8:06 to play. After Wright and Plavich swapped free throws, the 49ers took the lead 57-56, at 6:39, on a three-pointer from Withers.
White and Ratliff made a pair from the charity stripe to move the Hoosiers ahead 60-57, but the 49ers tied the game at 60-60 on a dunk by junior forward Chris Nance and a free throw from Goldwire.
Wright made one of two from the line to move IU ahead 61-60, but the 49ers scored the next two baskets to take the lead 64-61 with 3:20 remaining. Ewing trimmed the margin to one point with a tip-in at 2:58.
Basden and Vaden matched free throws to keep the difference at one, 66-65, at 1:53. Basden then slammed home two more, but Vaden drained a triple from the top of the key to knot the score a 68-68 with 1:19 to go.
Wright sank a triple with 38.8 to play to put IU ahead, but Charlotte came right back and behind a trey from Plavich tied the game at 71-71 with 28.9 seconds to play.
Ewing put the Hoosiers ahead 73-71 with 0.7 seconds to play in the game with a tip-in of a White miss, which led to Plavich's final shot.
Indiana will return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 28, at 8:00 p.m. (EST), against Ball State at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The game will be televised by ESPN Plus and is the sixth of 16 IU games televised on the local package. Mike Gleason (play-by-play) and former IU supersub John Laskowski (color commentary) will call all of the action. The match-up can also be heard live on the IU Radio Network with Don Fischer (play-by-play), Todd Leary (analysis) and Joe Smith (pre game, halftime and post game).
