Stephenson Lifts IU Past VCU (12-22-04)

Bloomington, Ind. -- Behind a balanced scoring effort that saw three Hoosiers net double figures, the Indiana women's basketball team won its fourth-straight game to improve to 7-3 on the season defeating Virginia Commonwealth, 63-41, Wednesday night at Assembly Hall.
Senior guard LeeAnn Stephenson scored 13 of her game-high and career-high 17 points in the second half to lead IU. The Garland, Texas, native also added a career-high seven assists, while collecting three rebounds. Along with her career high in points and assists, Stephenson was a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line.
Junior Angela Hawkins added a season-high nine points, while sophomore Sarah McKay had a strong outing recording 10 points and nine rebounds. The 10 points by McKay was the fourth time this season she has reached double-digits. Junior Cyndi Valentin added 13 points on 3-of-8 shooting, including a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
After taking a 25-12 lead into the lockerroom, Indiana opened the second half on fire as the Hoosiers continued to attack the paint, scoring six of the first eight points to extend their lead to 20 points at 33-13. IU's defense forced the Rams to miss their first five shots of the second half, while Indiana hit four of its first six.
Senior Jamie Gathing scored six of IU's 10 points during the early second half run. She ended the game with nine points on 3-of-5 shooting.
IU extended its lead to game-high 23 points as Stephenson nailed a three pointer at the 15:28 mark in the second half.
VCU got the IU lead under 20 as they went on a 9-2 run to cut the lead to 17 at 47-30. IU proved to be too much as the Hoosiers hit their last eight free throws to control and coast to the victory.
In the opening five minutes of the game, each team struggled to find its offensive rhythm as both teams committed three turnovers each and shot a combined 2-of-10 from the field.
Indiana pushed its lead to eight at 15-7 as the Hoosiers went on a 9-2 run to force VCU to call its first timeout of the half. During the run, the Hoosiers held VCU without a field goal for nearly five minutes. Also, during that stretch Hawkins helped IU on the boards as she recorded five of her eight rebounds.
IU went up by as many as 15 in the first half as the Hoosiers went inside to Hawkins and McKay. IU outscored VCU 6-0 inside the paint in the first half.
The Hoosiers held the Rams to 21.7 percent shooting on 5-of-23 in the opening stanza. Valentin led the Hoosiers with seven points, while McKay added six points and five rebounds at the end of the first half.
The Hoosiers are off until Thursday, Dec. 30, when they travel to Iowa City, Iowa, for the start of Big Ten competition as they take on the nationally ranked Hawkeyes beginning at 8:05 p.m.
