Four Among Region's Best

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Two Indiana men's tennis players ranked in the top-30 singles and a pair rest in the top-15 doubles standings of the first Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Region rankings. Senior Jakub Praibis and freshman Michael McCarthy are among the top singles players and the duo of senior Ryan Recht and junior John Stone sit amid the best doubles teams.
Praibis rank's sixth overall, while McCarthy stands in 26th. The pair of Recht and Stone opened at 11th in the first region ranking of the year.
Jakub closed the fall with a 4-4 mark, but did play in some highly competitive tournaments. The Litomerice, Czech Republic, product was one of 64 players in the main draw at the Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships. The Icy Hot/ITA Championships featured the nation's top collegiate men's players. All told, 46 of the top-50 players in the preseason ITA singles rankings competed in this year's main draw. He also earned a spot in the main draw of the prestigious ITA National Indoor Championships.
"This ranking should leave Jakub a little hungry," Head Coach Ken Hydinger said. 'He is much better than this indicates."
Both Praibis and McCarthy advanced to the round of 16 in the main draw at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships. McCarthy earned his spot in the main draw after winning a pair of qualifying matches and then besting a pair of players to get into the final 16.
"It's a very good result for a freshman to come-in and get ranked that high after the fall season," Hydinger said. "This ranking should be very encouraging for him."
McCarthy finished the campaign with a team-best mark of 9-3.
Stone and Recht battled through to the round of 16 at the Midwest Regional Men's Tennis Championships and closed the fall with a 2-2 doubles ledger.
"They have been very solid," Hydinger said. "They had a few close matches this fall and I have a feeling they will be in this situation all year long. It will depend on how they do in those matches, whether they will move up or down in the rankings. They are going to be a ranked team all year."
"If these rankings are a 6K cross country race, we are at the 1K mark," Hydinger said. "It is still so early in the year. Rankings are nice, but it's results that count, and we have some big matches coming up in the spring."
