Bloomington, Ind. - Due to academic issues, Indiana freshman forward Pat Ewing, Jr. will not accompany the Hoosiers to Penn State for Wednesday's 6 p.m. game (ESPN Plus Local, WTTV-Channel 4 in Indianapolis). One of seven IU players to play in all 20 games this season, Ewing has started six of those contests and is averaging 2.8 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. He tallied a career-high 12 points and 12 rebounds in a 77-57 victory over Morehead State on Dec. 23 for the first double-double of his collegiate career. He tipped in a missed Bracey Wright free throw at the end of regulation to send the Feb. 7 Iowa game into overtime.
While the Hoosiers will miss Ewing's energy off the bench at Penn State, IU coach Mike Davis hopes that this absence serves a valuable lesson to his team.
"Since the start of Big Ten play, Penn State has been one of the top rebounding teams in the league, so we will miss Pat's presence inside," Davis said. "But this decision hopefully sends a message to our entire team that their classwork is, should and always will be the top priority at Indiana."
