Houston, Texas-- The Indiana softball team defeated Manhattan College 5-1 in its first game of the Crowne Plaza Classic in Houston, Texas. The Hoosiers improved their record to 3-3 on the season.
Senior first baseman Karly McCormack led the Hoosiers offensively going 2-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Freshman Kim Richards was 1-3 with a double and two RBI.
Indiana got on the board early in the first inning when Val White, who had walked and advanced on a sacrifice, scored on a wild pitch by Manhattan pitcher Jillian Medea. After getting on base with hit, McCormack scored on an error by the catcher and gave Indiana the 2-0 advantage.
The Hoosiers came up big in inning three. White started the third off with a walk followed by a hit by McCormack who than advanced to second on a bad throw by the Manhattan second baseman. Tory Yamaguchi then walked followed by a single that scored White. Richards came to the plate and smacked a double to centerfield scoring McCormack and Yamaguchi, which gave Indiana a 5-0 lead.
Manhattan scored a run in the bottom of the third when Stefanie Gozdziewski scored putting the Jaspers on the board, 5-1 but it was not enough to overcome Indiana's lead.
The Hoosiers will play one more game this afternoon when they face Florida at 1:00 p.m.
