IU Softball Heads to Kay Brechtelsbauer Classic

Bloomington, Ind.--The Hoosiers will travel to Southern Illinois University’s Kay Brechtelsbauer Classic this weekend, February 28-29. The Cream and Crimson will take on Indiana State (10:00 a.m.) and Southern Illinois (12:00 p.m.) on Saturday and Harvard (12:00 p.m.) and a second game with Southern Illinois (4:00 p.m.) on Sunday.
Series History
IU will look for their 48th series win over Indiana State this weekend. The Hoosiers lead the series 47-17, including a 15-6 extra inning win the last time the two teams met in 2003. IU also leads the series with Southern Illinois, 10-6. The last time the two met was in 2001 with SIU winning the contest, 5-1. This weekend’s game with Harvard will mark the first time the two teams have met in competition.
Fourteen of IU’s opponents this year advanced to the 2003 NCAA Tournament, including Arizona who advanced to the Women’s College World Series and finished third. SIU advanced to the NCAA Regional tournament.
Ranked Opponents
Indiana faced its first of four USA Today/NFCA Top 25 ranked opponents this past weekend when they took on then ranked No. 12 Nebraska. .
The Hoosiers face No. 2 Arizona on March 6, No. 7 Michigan on April 2 and No. 19 Iowa on April 9. Other Hoosier opponents also receiving votes in the poll are Northwestern, Michigan State, Illinois, Florida and Notre Dame.
Houston Recap
On day one of the Crowne Plaza Classic in Houston, the Hoosiers started the day off with a 5-1 win over Manhattan College. Indiana was shutout by Florida, 1-0, in a hard-fought battle in the second game of the day. On Saturday, the Hoosiers’ Mariangee Bogado pitched a one-hit, complete game shutout over Centenary College for a 1-0 win. In a rare night game, IU fell to Houston 12-2. The Hoosiers came back with an impressive outing against then ranked No. 12 Nebraska on Sunday, forcing the game into extra innings before eventually falling 5-4.
Mighty McCormack
Senior first baseman Karly McCormack continues on her offensive tear. In Houston, McCormack batted .500 with a homerun, a double, three RBI and three runs scored. In the Nebraska game alone, McCormack went 3-for-4, including a two-run homerun. Overall, McCormack is hitting .481 and leads the Hoosiers in almost every offensive category. Even more impressive, McCormack leads the team in walks with five.
Bogado Pitches One-Hitter
All-American pitcher Mariangee Bogado pitched a one-hitter in a 1-0 complete game shutout over Centenary College on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 21. Bogado had seven strikeouts and two walks, giving her a 3-1 record on the season. Bogado also pitched against softball powerhouse Florida where she gave up just one run while striking out six. Overall, Bogado leads the IU pitching staff with four complete games and a 1.09 ERA.
Roark Pitches A Gem
Sophomore Megan Roark had a stellar pitching performance verses nationally ranked Nebraska. Roark, who came into the game in relief, pitched five innings while giving up just two hits and striking out four. Overall at the Crowne Plaza Classic, Roark pitched 8 innings with six strikeouts while giving up just one run, good for a 1.08 ERA.
Florida Recap
The IU softball team opened the 2004 campaign at the UCF-Triple Crown Invitational in St. Augustine, Fla. The Hoosiers lost their first game, 6-1, to Jacksonville but fought back to defeat Bethune-Cookman, 2-1. On day two of the tournament, Indiana played back-to-back extra inning games. In game one, the Hoosiers fell to Central Florida, 10-3 in eight innings and in game two defeated Boston College, 3-2, in ten innings. The Cream and Crimson ended the weekend by falling to Marshal, 9-4 for a seventh place finish in the tournament.
