Hoosiers Split Two on Day One

Lewisburg, Pa. -- The No. 9 Indiana water polo team split a pair of matches on the opening day of the Bucknell Invitational. The Hoosiers felt the effects of a three-week layoff and struggled with the sharpness of their game. Indiana dropped its opening match, 8-7 in sudden death to No. 18 Hartwick. The Hoosiers responded in the evening match with a 6-4 win over No. 19 Princeton.

"I thought both matches were the result of having not played in three weeks," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "It really caught up to us in the first game against Hartwick. We were not sharp. We gave up too many easy goals on the defensive end and missed to many shots on offense. We were much more in control of the second match against Princeton. We were still missing shots on the offensive end, and we just were not sharp."

IU now sits at 6-3 on the year with all nine matches against ranked opponents. The Hoosiers' loss to Hartwick was the first against the Hawks in the four matches between the two schools.

Junior Krista Peterson kept the Hoosiers in the game against the Hawks. The Portland, Ore., native scored three goals on nine shots to lead the way. The three goals brought her team best total to 17 on the year. She has now scored three goals in a match on three different occasions this season.

Sophomore Emily Schmitt scored a season best two goals on seven shots against Hartwick. Fellow classmate Clare Meadows scored her first goal of the season on four shots. Senior Melissa Pietras scored the Hoosiers other goal against Hartwick.

Junior Kandace Waldthaler assisted on a goal for the Hoosiers against the Hawks. Sophomore Janis Pardy led the way on the defensive end with two steals.

In the evening match, the Hoosiers picked up their fourth-straight victory over Princeton. Although she did not find the back of the net, Peterson was a force on the offensive end. She assisted on a career-high four goals in the victory. It was the ninth time in school history a player had registered four assists in a game. The last time came on Feb. 16, 2003 by Ginger Wang against UC-Santa Barbara. The school record for assists in a game is five, which was set on two different occasions.

Waldthaler found the back of the net three times against the Tigers. It was the first multi-goal game for Waldthaler in her first season with the Hoosiers. She also assisted on a goal in the victory for IU. Waldthaler and Peterson each drew two kickouts apiece to put the Hoosiers on the six-on-five advantage.

Sophomore Janis Pardy registered a pair of goals for the fourth time this season. The two goals brought Pardy's season total to nine. Sophomore Bridget McKeon scored the Hoosiers' other goal in the victory over Princeton.

Senior Kristy Streefkerk led the Hoosiers on the defensive end with three steals. She also registered her first assist of the season against Princeton. Pietras had two steals for IU in the victory.

Junior goalkeeper Jessica Goldner had nine saves while facing 19 shots against the Tigers. Goldner also had two steals in the match.

The Hoosiers will return to action tomorrow morning when they take on Harvard and George Washington. IU will battle Harvard at 10:00 a.m. followed by the George Washington match at 2:00 p.m. Both teams IU will face are ranked in the top eight of the CWPA rankings.
