Indiana Picks Up Two Wins

Lewisburg, Pa. -- The No. 9 Indiana water polo team finished the Bucknell Invitational with a pair of convincing victories. The Hoosiers downed George Washington, 11-5 before beating up on the Crimson of Harvard, 11-3. The 11-goal performances were the most the Hoosiers have scored in a game this season.
"We are much more pleased with the effort today," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "We are slowly starting to get our game legs back. I thought we did a good job of controlling the action from the beginning of both games. In the Harvard match, I thought we did a nice job of attacking and playing defense."
With the victories, Indiana improves to 8-3. The Hoosiers also remained perfect against George Washington and Harvard. IU is now 6-0 all-time against Harvard and 4-0 against the Colonials.
The Hoosiers jumped out to a 7-0 lead before George Washington was able to get on the board. The Colonials did not find the scoring column until four seconds left in the first half.
Junior Krista Peterson continued to lead the way for the Hoosiers offensively. The Portland, Ore., native netted five goals against GW, including three in the first period to push the Hoosiers to victory.
Sophomore Bridget McKeon put the Hoosiers on the board first just 17 seconds into the first period. McKeon's goal came with the Hoosiers on the 6-on-5 advantage. The Hoosiers poured it on scoring four goals in the final two minutes of the opening frame. Peterson scored three times during the run, while freshman Jaclyn Tameris scored the first goal of her career with just 37 seconds remaining in the opening period.
Junior Kandace Waldthaler and freshman Kara Woolley added second-period goals to push the Hoosiers out to the 7-0 advantage. It was Woolley's first career goal.
Tameris added her second goal of the game with three minutes remaining in the third period to stop a three-goal run by George Washington. George Washington had scored the first two goals of the second half after netting their first goal with just seconds remaining in the first half.
After the Colonials closed the third period trailing 8-4, the Hoosiers poured it on in the final period outscoring George Washington 3-1. Peterson added two goals to bring her game total to five. It was the third time in her career she has scored five or more goals in a game. Freshman Kristin Zernicke netted the Hoosiers other goal of the period.
The Hoosiers dominated Harvard in their final match of the Bucknell Invitational, 11-3. Peterson and Zernicke each scored to push the Hoosiers out to a 2-0 advantage just two minutes into the game.
Harvard drew within one with just 17 seconds remaining in the first period. Following a kickout on Zernicke, the Crimson's Molly Mehaffey scored to close the margin. Despite playing most of the second period scoreless, the Hoosiers took a 4-1 lead into the half following a pair of goals in the final 1:32. Sophomore Emily Schmitt and Waldthaler each netted goals before the end of the half.
Harvard once against cut into the lead following an Arin Keyser goal, making the score 4-2. Indiana then scored the next four goals of the match over the third and fourth periods to take a commanding 8-2. Waldthaler started the run and ended the run with goals. Her first goal came at the 4:52 mark of the third period and her final one was with 5:30 remaining in the match. The final goal for Waldthaler was a four-meter penalty shot as she scored three goals for the second time during the Bucknell Invitational. She scored three goals in the nightcap on Saturday against No. 19 Princeton.
McKeon scored her third goal in as many games at the Bucknell Invite with 3:07 remaining in the third period. The goal was her fourth of the year. Schmitt added her second goal of the match just 45 seconds into the final period to push the lead to 7-2.
After Harvard scored with 4:05 remaining in the game, the Hoosiers scored the final three. Zernicke scored her second goal of the match just 30 seconds after Harvard's goal. It was the third time this season that Zernicke has scored two goals in a match.
Freshman Amanda Paul netted the final goal of the match with 2:21 remaining on the clock. The goal was the first of Paul's Hoosier career.
Schmitt ended the game with three goals after scoring a pair in the final period. The three-goal performance was a career high. Peterson finished the Invitational with nine goals in four games, while fellow classmate Kandace Waldthaler had seven.
The Hoosiers will return to action at home next weekend. IU will host the first CWPA Western Conference Weekend of the year at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. The Hoosiers will take on Grove City at 12:30 p.m. followed by Slippery Rock at 4:45 p.m. Indiana will then take on rival and No. 8 Michigan in the premier match up at 8:15 p.m. The Hoosiers lost to the Wolverines, 4-2 early this season at the Michigan Invitational.
