St. Augustine, Fla.-- The Indiana softball team defeated Bethune-Cookman 2-1 and lost to Jacksonville 6-1 in day one of the Triple Crown Classic in St. Augustine, Fla.
"We were happy because we got out feet wet and we got to see some different pitching," said head coach Sara Hayes Nottger. Our cuts were great and we were impressed with our offensive and defensive play overall in game one."
Senior Val White led the Hoosiers offensively in both games going 3-6 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI for the day. In game two, White hit a game-winning homerun to secure the 2-1 win for Indiana.
In the Hoosiers first game against Jacksonville, the Dolphins got off to an early 4-0 lead on a grandslam homerun by Sonja Cadarette. The Hoosiers answered back in the third with a run of their own on an RBI single by senior Karly McCormack that scored White from second. Although getting a smattering of hits throughout the rest of the game, it was not enough to secure the win for Indiana.
The Hooisers came back strong in game two verses Bethune-Cookman. Sophomore pitcher Mariangee Bogado dominated on the mound, pitching a complete game with eight strikeouts.
The Hoosiers got on the board in the second inning after sophomore Lauren Hines hit her first triple of the season. Senior Karly McCormack hit a sacrifice fly to rightfield allowing Hines to score.
After White's homerun in the third inning, Bogado struck out seven of the next 15 batters she faced helping to secure Indiana's first win of the 2004 season.
"Game two was awesome because Bethune-Cookman is such a good team," said Nottger. "Mariangee just shined from the mound and we were strong offensively."
The Hoosiers are back in action at the Triple Crown Classic when they play two back-to-back games tomorrow, Feb.7. Indiana faces Central-Florida at 9:00 a.m. and Boston College at 11:30.
