BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana forward Jacob Peterson and defender Jed Zayner have been chosen to Soccer America's Freshman All-America team., the publication recently announced. The duo helped Indiana capture the 2003 NCAA Championship in Columbus, Ohio, in December.
Peterson finished his rookie season as Indiana's third-leading scorer with 19 points on seven goals and five assists. Three of his goals came in NCAA Tournament play, including the game winner in the finals against St. John's. The Portage, Mich., product played in all 25 games, making 21 starts in 2003. He was also a second-team All-Big Ten and a Big Ten All-Freshman team selection. Peterson earned College Cup Offensive MVP honors for his play in the final four.
Zayner started all 25 games at sweeper for the Hoosiers, who finished fifth nationally with an 0.64 goals-against average. The Orland Park, Ill., native, was named co-Big Ten Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on the conference All-Freshman team. Zayner was also awarded All-Tournament honors at the UConn adidas Classic and the College Cup.
Zayner and Peterson are the fourth and fifth IU players to make Soccer America's All-Freshman since 1997. Matt Fundenburger (1997), Ryan Mack (1998), Pat Noonan (1999) and Mike Ambersley (2001) were also selected to the team.
