IU Falls to No. 6 Hawaii, 10-8

Honolulu, Hawaii - The No. 12 Indiana water polo team dropped a tough 10-8 match to No. 6 Hawaii on the final day of the Aloha Classic. The Hoosiers went 3-1-1 and took third in Bracket `A' of the Classic. The score for Indiana's other match on Sunday against No. 2 Stanford was not made available by press time. The Hoosiers are now 10-5 on the year.
The Cream and Crimson opened the game with a flurry against the Rainbow Wahine of Hawaii. Junior Kandace Waldthaler scored the first two goals of the match in the opening minute of play to give IU an early 2-0 lead. Hawaii rallied to even the match at two. Both teams scored before the end of the first period as the match all square at three.
Waldthaler scored her third goal of the match to send the Hoosiers to the locker room with a 5-4 lead. The two teams traded goals throughout the third period of play with the Hoosiers clinging to a one-goal lead at 8-7 entering the final period of play.
The Rainbow Wahine would not be out done in their home waters as they shut out the Hoosiers in the final period of play. Hawaii's Beth Novick and Kristy Bagnall scored all three of UH's goals in the fourth period as the Rainbow Wahine picked up a come-from-behind 10-8 win.
Junior Krista Peterson added a pair of goals for IU in the loss, while freshman Kristin Zernicke and sophomores Bridget McKeon and Janis Pardy each found the back of the net as well.
On the opening two days of the Classic, IU went 3-0-1 in exhibition action. On the opening day of competition, the Hoosiers tied New Zealand 1, 7-7 before knocking off Dartmouth, 9-2. Waldthaler founded the back of the net on three occasions against New Zealand, while Peterson scored a pair. Pardy and freshman Kara Woolley each scored as well. Against Dartmouth, Peterson scored two goals against, while seven other Hoosiers each added a goal.
Indiana put together a pair of strong performances on the second day as they knocked off Canada, 10-6 and Japan, 11-8. Peterson led IU in scoring in both contests as she netted a hat trick against Canada and had four tallies against Japan. Waldthaler continued her scoring barrage netting three against Canada and two against Japan. Senior Melissa Pietras had a hat trick against Japan, while Pardy had two goals against her fellow countrywomen.
The Hoosiers will return to conference play this weekend when they travel to Erie, Pa. and Slippery Rock, Pa. on Saturday, March 27 and Sunday, March 28. IU will play five conference games during the two-day stretch. On Saturday, IU will face Salem International at 11:15 a.m., Washington and Jefferson at 3:00 p.m. and Mercyhurst at 5:30 p.m. All three of those games will be held at Gannon in Erie, Pa. At 8:30 p.m., the Hoosiers will battle Penn State-Behrend at Slippery Rock University in Slippery Rock, Pa. On Sunday, the Hoosiers will take on Gannon at 12:30 p.m. in Slippery Rock, Pa. Indiana enters the second CWPA Conference Weekend with a 2-1 mark in the Western Division.
