Hoosiers Drop Close Match

Honolulu, Hawaii -- The No. 12 Indiana water polo team dropped another tight match to a top program as they fell to No. 2 Stanford, 4-2 at the Aloha Classic. The Hoosiers were even with the Cardinal heading into the final period of play before a pair of Stanford goals sealed the Hoosiers' fate. IU drops to 10-6 overall with all six loses coming to teams ranked in the top 20.
"In general, I thought we played very well," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "We just didn't make the plays down the stretch that we needed to make to win. We were tied with the No. 2 team in the country going into the final quarter. We just need to learn how to buckle down and find ways to win those games. I definitely thought we played very solid this weekend."
The Cream and Crimson dropped a pair of two-goal matches to No. 2 Stanford and No. 6 Hawaii on Sunday. Later in the day, the Hoosiers fell to Rainbow Wahine, 10-8 after leading going into the final period.
The Cardinal struck first in the game as they scored with 2:53 remaining in the opening frame. Junior Krista Peterson was whistled for an ejection, and Stanford's Faust netted the first goal just 12 seconds later with a six-on-five advantage.
Stanford extended its lead to two with a goal at the 5:21 mark of the second period. Hewko scored the goal as the Cardinal led 2-0. IU responded with a goal before the end of the half. The Hoosiers drew a foul and a four-meter penalty shot out of a timeout. Junior Kandace Waldthaler netted the goal off the penalty shot to draw IU within one. It was Waldthaler's fourth penalty shot goal on the year.
The Hoosiers wasted little time knotting the match up out of the locker room. Waldthaler struck again scoring her second goal of the game less than a minute into the third period. The Fairfield, Calif., native now has 20 goals on the year, including 16 in her last eight matches.
"Kandace had a terrific weekend," King said. "She has been adjusting to having to play against consistent competition. She has been working really hard and has developed into a solid threat for us on the offensive end."
Stanford took the lead for good on a goal by Hansen with 5:13 remaining in the match. The goal came with the Cardinal on a six-on-five advantage. Luber scored the Cardinal's final goal with 31 seconds remaining for the final margin.
Senior Melissa Pietras and freshman Kristin Zernicke led the Hoosiers with two steals apiece. Junior goalkeeper Jessica Goldner was solid in net making nine saves while facing 20 shots.
The Hoosiers will return to conference play this weekend when they travel to Erie, Pa. and Slippery Rock, Pa., on Saturday, March 27 and Sunday, March 28. IU will play five conference games during the two-day stretch. On Saturday, IU will face Salem International at 11:15 a.m., Washington and Jefferson at 3:00 p.m. and Mercyhurst at 5:30 p.m. All three of those games will be held at Gannon in Erie, Pa. At 8:30 p.m., the Hoosiers will battle Penn State-Behrend at Slippery Rock University in Slippery Rock, Pa. On Sunday, the Hoosiers will take on Gannon at 12:30 p.m. in Slippery Rock, Pa. Indiana enters the second CWPA Conference Weekend with a 2-1 mark in the Western Division.
