IU Continues Conference Play

Bloomington, Ind. -- The No. 11 Indiana water polo team will compete in the second CWPA Conference weekend at Gannon and Slippery Rock on Saturday, March 27 and Sunday, March 28. Indiana will play five Western Division games over the two-day span.
Indiana enters the weekend with a 2-1 Western Division record. The Cream and Crimson will start off the weekend on Saturday with three games at Grove City in Grove City, Pa. IU will battle Salem International at 11:15 a.m., Washington & Jefferson at 3:00 p.m. and Mercyhurst at 5:00 p.m. The Hoosiers will then travel to Slippery Rock, Pa., on Saturday for a 8:30 p.m. match up with Penn State-Behrend. Indiana will wrap up the weekend on Sunday at Slippery Rock against Gannon.
The Hoosiers opened the conference part of their schedule with wins over Grove City, 13-3 and Slippery Rock, 18-3 on March 6. IU then dropped a 4-1 match to No. 8 Michigan.

On Mercyhurst
The Hoosiers and Mercyhurst will square off for the third time this weekend. The Hoosiers are 2-0 all-time against the Lakers, including a 20-3 victory last season. The 20 goals equaled a school record.
Mercyhurst enters the weekend at 7-4 overall and 1-1 in the CWPA Western Division. Ann Markley leads the Lakers in scoring with 43 goals on the year and 18 assists. Tessa DiLoreto is second on the team with 22 goals and 11 assists. Christina Pantoja leads the team on the defensive end. Pantoja has made 82 saves in goal this season.

On Gannon
The Gannon Lady Knights enter the conference weekend with an 11-1 record, including a 3-0 mark in the Western Division. The Lady Knights won the inaugural Division II Eastern Championship this season and are riding a seven-match winning streak.
Gannon has two common opponents with IU in George Washington and Slippery Rock. Gannon is 5-0 against SRU, while the Hoosiers own an 18-3 victory over The Rock. Gannon's lone loss came to GW, 6-3 while IU downed the Colonials, 11-5. The Lady Knights are led in scoring by Katherine Bucceri and Jaime Theisen. Bucceri has 28 goals while Theisen has 21. Tara Skasik has been solid in net for Gannon allowing only 47 goals and making 154 saves.
The Hoosiers and Lady Knights have met on four occasions with IU winning all four. During the 2001 season, the Hoosiers equaled a school record as they scored 20 goals against Gannon.

The Hoosiers own a perfect 4-0 mark against the Behrend Lions of Penn State-Behrend. IU has outscored Penn State-Behrend 62-11 in four games, including a 15-3 victory last season.
The Behrend Lions enter the weekend with a 1-12 record on the year. Their lone victory came against Utica, 14-7 on March 10. IU and Penn State-Behrend have faced two common opponents. The Behrend Lions have lost on three occasions to Grove City, while IU beat the Wolverines, 13-3. The Hoosiers also defeated George Washington, 11-5 while Penn State-Behrend fell to the Colonials, 17-2.

The Washington & Jefferson Presidents enter the conference weekend with a 4-3 mark. The Hoosiers and Presidents have met on four occasions with IU winning all four. The Hoosiers have outscored W&J 68-5 in those four meetings. In the two teams' last meeting, the Hoosiers shutout the Presidents, 14-0.
The Hoosiers and Presidents have one common opponent in George Washington. IU downed the Colonials, 11-5, while GW knocked off the Presidents, 16-1.

On Salem International
The Salem International Tigers enter the conference weekend with a 1-11 record. The Tigers are coached by Keith Bullion. He takes over a Salem program that returns to action after a one-year hiatus.
The Hoosiers and Tigers have only met on one other occasion. IU scored a school record tying 20 goals in the 20-10 victory during the 2001 season. The two teams have a pair of common opponents in Slippery Rock and George Washington. The Hoosiers defeated SRU, 18-3 and GW, 11-5 earlier this season, while Salem is a combined 0-4 against the pair.

Waldthaler Named CWPA Player of the Week
Junior Kandace Waldthaler was named Collegiate Water Polo Association Western Division Player of the Week for her performance at the Aloha Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. She helped the Hoosiers to a 3-2-1 mark in bracket `A' of the Classic. The Fairfield, Calif., native scored 13 goals in the six games.
Waldthaler netted three hat tricks on the weekend and scored a least two goals in five of the six matches. In the Hoosiers two collegiate match ups against No. 2 Stanford and No. 6 Hawaii, Waldthaler continued her scoring barrage. She scored five goals on only five shots in the two matches and converted both four-meter penalty shots she attempted.
For the year, Waldthaler ranks second on the Hoosiers with 20 goals. Over her last eight collegiate matches, she has scored 16 goals, including four hat tricks.
Division Realignment
After playing their first three seasons in the CWPA Southern Division, the Hoosiers are now part of the Western Division. The CWPA realigned this season to include a Northern, Southern, Northeastern and Western Division to make up the conference. The four divisions will all host Divisional Championships with the winner advancing to the CWPA Conference Championships. Four at-large teams will also be selected to compete at the Championships. The winner of the CWPA Conference Championships will play in the NCAA Final Four in Palo Alto, Calif.
The Hoosiers will be joined in the Western Division with some common foes from the old Allegheny Region of the Southern Division. The team making up the Western Division are Gannon, Grove City, Mercyhurst, Michigan, Penn State-Behrend, Salem International, Slippery Rock and Washington & Jefferson.
Defensive Minded
The Hoosiers have looked impressive on the defensive end of the pool in the early part of the 2004 season. Indiana has only allowed more than six goals on three occasions, all losses, 9-4 to No. 4 Long Beach State, 8-7 to No. 18 Hartwick and 10-8 to No. 6 Hawaii. The Hoosiers are giving up an average of under five goals a game with all 12 of the 16 matches on the schedule coming against ranked opponents.
Junior goalkeeper Jessica Goldner is averaging over eight saves a game. At the UCSD Arena Invitational, Goldner had 39 saves in four matches, including an 11-save performance against No. 15 UC-Irvine. She also held No. 17 UC-San Diego to one goal in an 8-1 victory. Against No. 2 Stanford, Goldner had nine saves while only giving up four goals. She registered a season-high 14 saves against No. 6 Hawaii at the Aloha Classic
Indiana defenders have had a field day as well, averaging just over 11 steals a game. Freshman Kristin Zernicke leads the way for IU with 24 steals. Sophomores Janis Pardy and Bridger McKeon are tied for second with 19. Goldner has 17 saves on the year as well. Goldner also has an impressive goals against average at 4.90 goals against average.
All-American Form
Junior Krista Peterson has looked good in the early going of 2004. She is averaging just under two goals a game while leading the Hoosiers with 30 on the season.
Peterson has started all 16 matches this season and is shooting 47 percent on 30-of-64. Against George Washington, Peterson netted her third five-plus goal game of her career scoring five in the victory over the Colonials. Along with leading the team in goals, Peterson leads the team in kickouts earned and assists with 22 and 12, respectively.. She is also 3-of-3 on four-meter penalty shots.
Peterson was an honorable mention All-America selection in 2003. She was one of only nine girls outside the state of California to make any All-America team. She was also the CWPA Eastern Championship MVP, scoring nine goals and leading the Hoosiers to the NCAA Final Four. She became the first Eastern player to earn first-team All-NCAA Championships.
Facing Ranked Opponents
Once again the Hoosiers schedule is loaded with ranked opponents. Aside from the post season, the Hoosier schedule could include as many as 14 ranked opponents.
The Hoosiers first nine matches of 2004 were against ranked opponents with two of IU's three losses coming to teams in the top 10 (No. 10 Michigan and No. 4 Long Beach State). Indiana has knocked off No. 11 UC-Santa Barbara, No. 13 UC-Irvine, No. 15 Arizona State, No. 19 Princeton and No. 17 UC-San Diego on two occasions. The Hoosiers other loss to this point in the year came in sudden death to No. 18 Hartwick.
IU's streak of nine consecutive games against ranked opponents ended at the Bucknell Invitational when the Hoosiers defeated George Washington and Harvard on day two. The Hoosiers will get another shot at the Wolverines of Michigan this weekend in Bloomington. The Wolverines enter ranked eighth.
At last weekend's Aloha Classic, the Hoosiers dropped a pair of two-goal matches to No. 2 Stanford and No. 6 Hawaii.
Last season, the Hoosiers knocked off 11 ranked opponents in 21 matches. IU also knocked off its first top 10 opponents in 2003.
