Hoosiers Fall in Sudden Death

Ann Arbor, Mich. -- It was another classic battle for the Western Division Championship on Sunday afternoon that needed sudden death to find a winner. The No. 10 Indiana water polo team found itself on the losing end of a 5-4 battle to No. 8 Michigan in the title game. Michigan's Meg Knudtsen scored with the 6-on-5 advantage just 42 seconds into the sudden death period to give the Wolverines the win.
Despite the loss, the Hoosiers got an exceptional effort in the cage from junior Jessica Goldner. Goldner out played her counterpart in net, Michigan All-American Bestey Armstrong by making 12 saves compared to Armstrong's seven. Goldner also faced a school record 33 shots in just under 35 minutes of action.
The Hoosiers got on the board first with a goal from junior Krista Peterson. Peterson played give-and-go with fellow classmate Kandace Waldthaler and scored with just over a minute into the game. Michigan responded with a goal at the 2:51 mark to even the match up at one after the opening period of play.
Indiana took the lead into the half thanks to a goal from sophomore Janis Pardy. The Calgary, Alberta, Canada, native scored from the perimeter off the assist from sophomore Clare Meadows to give IU a 2-1 lead at the break.
Michigan took its first lead of the game with a pair of goals in the fourth minute of the third period. Shana Welch scored her second goal of the game with 3:09 remaining in the third period with Michigan on the advantage. Sheetal Narsai followed that up with a skip shot into the left corner of the net giving U of M a 3-2 lead with 2:33 left in the third.
In the pervious two match ups between these schools, the Hoosiers lost the lead and never responded. This time that would not be the case as Indiana scored the next two goals of the match to retake the lead.
Peterson netted her second goal of the game and 10th of the Championships with only 49 seconds remaining in the third period. Meadows found Peterson across the pool with a pass, and the Portland, Ore., native scored to the upper right corner of the net.
Senior Melissa Pietras gave IU the lead just under a minute into the final period of play. Goldner found Pietras on the break, and after pump faking twice, Pietras scored to the far post.
It appeared as though the Hoosiers might claim victory, but with just 1:22 remaining in the final period the Wolverines knotted it up. Jo Antonsen scored from the perimeter into the right side of the net, tying the game at four apiece.
The Hoosiers had an excellent shot to win at the end of regulation. Following an exceptional save by Goldner on the defensive end, the Hoosiers called timeout. Indiana ran its play to perfection as sophomore Bridget McKeon got up and out of the water. Peterson hit her with the pass, but McKeon's shot was saved by Armstrong as time expired.
The two teams battled through a pair of defensive-filled overtime periods. Goldner came up big for IU on numerous occasions, making four saves in the first two overtime periods.
By virtue of finishing second in the Western Division Championships, the Hoosiers earn an automatic berth to the CWPA Eastern Championships next weekend. Indiana is the defending CWPA Champions after capturing the title last season. The 2004 Championships will be played at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa. The seeding for the Championships will be made available by the CWPA earlier next week.
