Indiana Garners Third Seed

Bloomington, Ind. -- The Collegiate Water Polo Association announced the seeding and schedule for the 2004 Eastern Championships on Monday afternoon. The No. 10 and defending CWPA Conference Champion Indiana water polo team will enter the tournament as the third seed.
The Hoosiers will get a first round bye at the Championships and will face the winner of George Washington and Gannon on the Saturday, April 24 at 11:20 p.m. EST. Either way the match up will be a rematch as Indiana has already played both possible opponents in 2004. The Hoosiers knocked off George Washington, the sixth seed at the Championships, 11-5 at the Bucknell Invitational in February. The Cream and Crimson have upended Gannon, the 11th seed in the Championships, on a pair of occasions. Indiana downed Gannon last weekend, 12-3 at the Western Division Championships. The Hoosiers also defeated the Golden Knights during the regular season, 11-5.
Along the Championship path, the Hoosiers have a chance to garner some revenge for earlier losses this season. IU could possibly face No. 14 Hartwick, the second seed, in the semifinals and No. 8 Michigan, the top seed, in the championship. The Hoosiers lost to Hartwick, 8-7 in sudden death at the Bucknell Invitational earlier this season. IU has also lost to Michigan on three occasions. The last time Indiana and Michigan squared off, the Wolverines were victorious in sudden death, 5-4 in the title game of the Western Division Championships.
Indiana won last season's Eastern Championship by knocking off Brown, 7-5 in the title game. The Hoosiers advanced through the bracket by knocking off George Washington, 9-6 in the second round and Princeton, 5-1 in the semifinals. Junior All-American Krista Peterson was named the Most Valuable Player of the Eastern Championships last season. Along with Peterson, junior Jessica Goldner was named second-team All-Eastern Championships.
The CWPA Eastern Championships will begin on Friday, April 23 with first round matches starting at 1:10 p.m. EST. The Championships will be held a Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa. The Eastern Champion will earn the CWPA's automatic bid to the NCAA Final Four in Stanford, Calif.
