IU to Defend Conference Title

Bloomington, Ind. -- The No. 10 Hoosiers look to defend their CWPA Conference Championship this weekend in Lewisburg, Pa. The Cream and Crimson enter the 2004 CWPA Eastern Championships as the third seed. By virtue of its No. 3 seed, the Hoosiers will receive a first round bye. The Eastern Championships will be held at the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium on the campus of Bucknell University.
Indiana will take on the winner of sixth-seeded George Washington and 11th-seeded Gannon in the second round. The match is scheduled for 11:20 p.m. EST on Saturday, April 24.
Indiana has already defeated both of their possible second round opponents. The Hoosiers knocked off George Washington, 11-5 at the Bucknell Invitational in February. IU has upended Gannon on a pair of occasions. Indiana downed Gannon last weekend, 12-3 at the Western Division Championships. The Hoosiers also defeated the Golden Knights during the regular season, 11-5.
Along the championship path, the Hoosiers have a chance to garner some revenge for earlier losses this season. IU could possibly face No. 13 Hartwick, the second seed, in the semifinals and No. 7 Michigan, the top seed, in the championship. The Hoosiers lost to Hartwick, 8-7 in sudden death at the Bucknell Invitational earlier this season. IU has also lost to Michigan on three occasions. The last time Indiana and Michigan squared off, the Wolverines were victorious in sudden death, 5-4 in the title game of the Western Division Championships.
Indiana won last season's Eastern Championship by knocking off Brown, 7-5 in the title game. The Hoosiers advanced through the bracket by knocking off George Washington, 9-6 in the second round and Princeton, 5-1 in the semifinals. Junior All-American Krista Peterson was named the Most Valuable Player of the Eastern Championships. Along with Peterson, junior Jessica Goldner was named second-team All-Eastern Championships.

Western Division Recap
The Hoosiers fell just short of capturing their first Western Division Champion last weekend in Ann Arbor, Mich. Indiana fell to No. 8 and top-seeded Michigan, 5-4 in sudden death.
The Hoosiers led most of the way against the Wolverines and with just 1:22 remaining, Michigan tied up the match at four. After two defensive filled overtime periods, Michigan scored just 42 seconds into the sudden death period with the 6-on-5 advantage.
IU advanced to the title game with a pair of easy wins over Grove City, 12-2 and Gannon, 12-3.
Junior Krista Peterson had a dominating performance as she scored 10 goals in the three matches, including a pair of four-goal performances in the opening two rounds. Junior Jessica Goldner had a pair of double digit save games making 11 against Gannon and 12 against Michigan. In the match against the Wolverines, Goldner faced a school record 33 shots and made four impressive saves in overtime.
Chasing the Books
Junior Jessica Goldner is quickly etching her name into the Hoosiers record books as the top goalkeeper ever to suit up in the Cream and Crimson. After setting single-game school records in saves with 19 and shots faced with 30 last season, Goldner has moved into the top spot on the career shots faced list and ranks second in career saves.
After facing 44 shots at the Fluid Four Invitational, Goldner moved past Kirsten Mayberry for the most shots faced by an Indiana goalkeeper in a career. She now has faced 1,417 career shots in three seasons for the Hoosiers. She also ranks second on the career saves list with 638 blocks. She trails Mayberry, who has 666 career saves. Goldner would need to average 9.3 saves a game in the Hoosiers' three-matches at the CWPA Eastern Championships.
In the Hoosiers' last match against No. 8 Michigan for the CWPA Western Division Championship, Goldner eclipsed her own school record for shots faced. In a sudden death match, Goldner faced 33 shots while making 12 saves.
Impressive Showing Against World's Best
The Hoosiers turned in a solid showing against the United States National Team as part of Team USA's College Tour in preparation for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Despite falling to the defending World Champions, 15-5, the Hoosiers turned in some impressive performances. Indiana actually led the best team in the World with under three minutes remaining in the opening period, 2-1.
Junior All-American Krista Peterson showed she could play with the best in the World netting a hat trick to lead the Hoosiers. Junior Kandace Waldthaler and sophomore Janis Pardy each added a goal as well for Indiana. Freshman Kristin Zernicke had a solid game as well, assisting on two goals and making a team-high three steals. Pardy also had a pair of assists, while sophomore Emily Schmitt assisted on a goal against Team USA.
Junior Jessica Goldner was solid in net for the Hoosiers. The 2003 second-team All-CWPA selection had six saves and one steal in the cage for IU.
Player of the Week
Junior Krista Peterson was honored for her stellar performance against the United States National Team. Peterson was honored on April 16 after she netted a hat trick against the defending World Champions.
Peterson lead the Hoosier charge as she was 3-of-4 shooting. She helped the Hoosiers take a 2-1 advantage over the defending World Champions in the opening period of play. The five goals scored by the Hoosiers were the second most given up by Team USA on the tour. The Portland, Ore., native also had a steal and a kickout earned in the match against the 2000 Olympic silver medallists.
All-American Form
Junior Krista Peterson has been a force on the offensive end for IU this season. With the graduation of three-time All-American Kristin Stanford, much was expected of Peterson, and she has delivered. She is averaging over two goals a game while leading the team with 55 scores. She also leads the team with nine hat tricks on the year while shooting 50.5-percent.
Peterson has started all 26 matches this season. Against George Washington, Peterson netted her third five-plus goal game of her career scoring five in the victory over the Colonials. Along with leading the team in goals, Peterson leads IU with 25 assists and ranks second in kickouts earned with 36. She is also 4-of-4 on four-meter penalty shots.
Peterson was an honorable mention All-America selection in 2003. She was one of only nine girls outside the state of California to make any All-America team. She was also the CWPA Eastern Championship MVP, scoring nine goals and leading the Hoosiers to the NCAA Final Four. She became the first Eastern player to earn first-team All-NCAA Championships.
