Hoosiers Fall in Semifinals

Lewisburg, Pa. -- The No. 10 Indiana water polo team fell in the semifinals of the 2004 Eastern Championships to No. 13 and second-seeded Hartwick, 6-5. The Hoosiers led 5-4 after three periods of play, but the Hawks scored a pair of 6-on-5 goals in the final period to pick up the win. The Hoosiers will play in the third-place match tomorrow afternoon at 1:40 p.m. EST against Brown.
The Hoosiers fell behind early as Hartwick scored the first two goals of the match. The Hawks got goals at the 3:32 mark by Colleen Santos and by Kate Chambers at the 1:52 mark of the opening period to push Hartwick out to the lead.
Junior Krista Peterson drew IU within one as she scored a minute and a half into the second period. Hartwick would answer though as Chambers scored just 20 second later. Sheri Johnson extended Hartwick's lead to three with a goal before the end of the half. Peterson was ejected on the play and Johnson scored the 6-on-5 goals just 13 seconds later.
Indiana's offense finally started clicking in the third period as the Hoosiers scored the game's next four goals all in the third stanza. Sophomore Emily Schmitt netted her 19th goal of the year just over minute into the second half. Fellow classmate Janis Pardy scored a minute and a half later to draw IU within a goal.
The junior duo of Peterson and Kandace Waldthaler put the Hoosiers on top with consecutive goals. Peterson scored her second goal of the match and tied the game at four with just 3:34 remaining in the third period. Waldthaler then gave IU its first lead of the match with just under three minutes remaining. The goal was Waldthaler's 40th on the season.
Hartwick evened the match up when Vanessa Malik scored a 6-on-5 goal only 25 seconds into the final period. The Hawks used the 6-on-5 advantage once again with just 1:31 remaining in the match. Following a kickout on freshman Kristin Zernicke, Chambers scored her third goal of the match for the Hawks to give them the final 6-5 margin.
In the semifinal match, Hartwick was 3-of-10 with the 6-on-5 advantage, while the Hoosiers were unable to convert in three opportunities. Hartwick also had a four-meter penalty attempt, but failed to convert. The Hoosiers fell short in their attempt to avenge a loss to Hartwick earlier this year. The Hawks knocked off Indiana, 8-7 in sudden death at the Bucknell Invitational earlier this season.
Indiana opened the 2004 Eastern Championships with an 11-6 win over the sixth-seeded George Washington Colonials. Indiana scored five goals in the opening period and cruised from that point on.
Waldthaler scored four goals for the third time this season to lead the way for the Hoosiers. After only scoring one goal through the first 26 games of the year, senior Kristy Streefkerk netted a pair of tallies against the Colonials.
Five other Hoosiers found the scoring column in the victory. Peterson, senior Melissa Pietras, Zernicke, Pardy and sophomore Clare Meadows each scored in the win for the Cream and Crimson.
The Hoosiers are now 19-9 on the year and will take on No. 20 and fourth-seeded Brown in the third-place game tomorrow afternoon. The match is schedule for 1:40 p.m. EST at the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium.
