Indiana Hosts Team USA

Bloomington, Ind. -- The No. 11 Indiana water polo team will play host to the United States National Team at 7:00 p.m. in the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center on Thursday. The Hoosiers will be the fifth game on Team USA's 13-match Collegiate Tour. Admission to the match is free.
The US National Team has already knocked off a trio of top 15 college teams in No. 14 Hartwick, 14-4, No. 2 Stanford, 14-7 and No. 5 San Diego State, 9-4. On Tuesday, the US National Team defeated No. 8 Michigan, 14-3, in Ann Arbor. In the Michigan match, Team USA took the advantage over the Wolverines with strong second and fourth period efforts. The National Team outscored Michigan, 6-1 in the second period and 6-0 in the fourth.
Team USA is prepping for the 2004 Olympics later this year in Athens, Greece. The team won the silver medal in 2000 and is currently ranked as the No. 1 team in the world. The team includes seven Olympians from the 2000 squad and 13 players from the 2003 World Championship team. The collegiate tour consists of four more games on the East Coast and Midwest, including the match against the Hoosiers, before heading back west for five games.
Team USA is led by head coach Guy Baker. Baker has led Team USA from the No. 8 ranking in the World in 1998 to the top spot this year. The team includes six players from UCLA, four from Stanford, two from California and one from San Diego State.
The Hoosiers wrapped up the regular season last weekend with the Fluid Four Challenge. Indiana knocked off No. 19 Cal State Northridge, 10-4, in the opening match, before falling to No. 7 Loyola Marymount, 13-7. The Hoosiers finished the regular season with a 16-7 overall record, including a 7-1 mark in the CWPA Western Division.

Back-to-Back Player of the Week Honors
The Hoosiers have had the CWPA Western Division Player of the Week each of the last two weeks. Freshman Kara Woolley was named the POW on April 1 for her performance against five conference foes, while junior Kandace Waldthaler earned the same honor on March 25 for her play at the Aloha Classic.
Woolley helped the Hoosiers to a 5-0 mark against conference foes scoring 12 goals, dishing out eight assists and making eight steals. She shot 85.7-percent (12-14) in the five games. Woolley now ranks fourth on the team in goals with 19.
Woolley was a force in the Hoosiers' school record 21-goal performance against Salem International. The Fresno, Calif., native netted her second career four-goal game against the Tigers. She also had three steals against SIU matching her career-high. Woolley recorded two more hat tricks on the weekend in wins over Penn State-Behrend and Washington & Jefferson. She ranks third on the team in hat tricks with four.
Also against Penn State-Behrend, Woolley dished out five assists, equaling the single-game school record. She holds the mark with two other girls and is the first since 2002 to accomplish the feat. Woolley also had a pair of steals in the victory over the Behrend Lions and helped the Hoosiers establish another school record for team steals in a game with 26.
Waldthaler helped the Hoosiers to a 3-2-1 mark in bracket `A' of the Aloha Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Fairfield, Calif., native scored 13 goals in the six games.
Waldthaler netted three hat tricks on the weekend and scored at least two goals in five of the six matches. In the Hoosiers two collegiate match ups against No. 2 Stanford and No. 6 Hawaii, Waldthaler continued her scoring barrage. She had a perfect five goals on five shots in the two matches and converted both four-meter penalty shots she attempted.
For the year, Waldthaler ranks second on the Hoosiers with 33 goals. She leads the Hoosiers in four-meter penalty goals with eight and kickouts earned with 36.
All-American Form
Junior Krista Peterson has been a force on the offensive end for IU this season. With the graduation of three-time All-American Kristin Stanford much was expected of Peterson; she has delivered. She is averaging almost two goals a game while leading the team with 45 scores. She also leads the team with seven hat tricks on the year while shooting 50-percent.
Peterson has started all 23 matches this season. Against George Washington, Peterson netted her third five-plus goal game of her career scoring five in the victory over the Colonials. Along with leading the team in goals, Peterson leads the team with 22 assists and ranks second in kickouts earned with 28. In the Hoosiers' 10-4 win over No. 19 Cal State-Northridge, Peterson equaled a career-high with four assists. She is also 3-of-3 on four-meter penalty shots.
Peterson was selected Honorable Mention All-America in 2003 as one of only nine girls outside the state of California to make any All-America team. She was also the CWPA Eastern Championship MVP, scoring nine goals and leading the Hoosiers to the NCAA Final Four. She became the first Eastern player to earn first-team All-NCAA Championships honors.
Post Season Forth Coming
Following their exhibition match with the United States National Team, the Hoosiers will embark on the defense of their CWPA Championship. The Hoosiers won the 2003 title and the berth in the NCAA Final Four last season.
The Hoosiers' journey will start with the CWPA Western Division Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich. Indiana is the second seed following their second-place (7-1) finish in the Division's regular season. The eighth-ranked Wolverines of Michigan are the top seed thanks to a perfect conference regular season. IU will take on Grove City at 10:15 a.m. in the opening round of Division Championships. The Hoosiers knocked off GCC earlier this season 13-2 in Bloomington.
The winners of IU/GCC and Gannon/Mercyhurst will battle at 4:30 p.m., while the losers will play at 3:15 p.m. The winner of the victors' match will play for the Western Division title on Sunday at 12:45 p.m.
The winner of the Western Division, along with the winners from the other three divisions (Southern, Northern and Eastern), earns a berth in the CWPA Eastern Championships. Eight other teams from the four divisions will join the four winners at the Eastern Championships. The four division champions will receive byes in the first round of the Eastern Championships. The winner of the CWPA Eastern Championships earns the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. The CWPA Eastern Championships will be held at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa.
