“Iowa is a very good team,” said Indiana head coach Sara Hayes Nottger. “We played a little cautious and we were a little bit intimidated today. But that is going to change. We are going to come out much more aggressive and be ready to roll tomorrow. We are going to take some hacks and stay on our toes defensively. We need to have much better focus for tomorrow’s game.”
Pitcher Mariangee Bogado fell to 12-10 on the season after pitching four innings with four strikeouts. The sophomore led the Hoosiers at the plate, going 2-for-3 on the day.
Iowa jumped out to an early lead in the first inning when they scored three runs on two hits and one Hoosier error. They tacked on two more runs in the second when center fielder Laura Chipman hit an RBI triple and then scored on a routine grounder to short. The Hawkeye’s sixth run came on a homerun by designated player Kylie Murray.
2003 Big Ten Pitcher of the Year Lisa Birocci held the Hoosiers to just four hits, which were scattered throughout the seven innings.
The Hoosiers will look for their first Big Ten Conference win tomorrow, April 10 when they take on Iowa in the second game of a two-game series. First pitch is set for noon.
