Hoosiers Selected to the NCAA Central Regionals

Bloomington, Ind. - For the first time since the 1996-97 season and the first time in head coach Mike Mayer's six-year tenure, Indiana has been selected to the NCAA Men's Golf Championships. The Hoosiers will participate in the Central Regionals in West Lafayette at the Kampen Golf Course on Thursday-Saturday, May 20-22.
The championships will be conducted June 1-4 at Cascades Golf Course, The Homestead in Hot Springs, Virginia. Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University is the host institution for this year's championships.
Three regional tournaments, encompassing the current nine regions, will be conducted May 20-22. A total of 27 teams and six individuals have been selected for each regional competition with 10 teams and two individuals advancing from each regional to the championships finals.
"We are excited and a little relieved," said Mayer. "We really felt like we deserved this after the good, productive season we had. We beat a lot of good teams. We also feel like the Kampen Course is a good course for us. We beat a lot of good teams, including Oklahoma State (the top seed in the Central Region) and Oklahoma (the fifth seed), at the Boilermaker Invitational. We feel like we can compete, and we're ready to get started."
IU is coming off one of the most successful seasons in the program's history after claiming four team titles, the second-most in school history and the most since the 1974-75 season. The team also closed out the regular season with a 290.17 stroke average, breaking last year's school record scoring average of 293.70.
